The discovery thread!

I'm down! Let's get something organized

Would be interesting to get a community IEM going but I can foresee some red tape at the same time.

I already know a few folks here on headfi that are sponsors that will be willing to make whatever folks want them to make but if we have the name discovery attacted to it. Will we all have to declare members of the trade?

I suppose I can ask the admins on headfi if something like that is possible.

If I remember correct. V moda a long time ago started a community thread on headfi wanting feedback for a new product and and that was somewhat sucessful. Hmm.
Lol that would have monetary overhead and have serious limitations.

The cheapest method is creating an open source design. You would be able to 3d print an arbitrarily complicated shell from whatever material you like, even from metal. You could do 3d print and PCB orders from PCB fabs for little cost. The drivers, cable and tips can be purchased from aliexpress.

This is the method ergo mechanical community works atleast.

It also deincentivizes shilling for IEMs mindlessly. Probably cuts the profit overhead as well. You know what you get a lot more than before.

Closest thing to it right now is the now retired Smabat Proto 1.

That is exactly what happend to @AmericanSpirit with the whole Night Oblivian Butastur project. He is no longer posting here on headfi due to the red tape.

Where it gets a bit sticky is if there is some type of business incentive for a project regarless for profit or not. Obviously if there was a community voted project for an IEM and everyone approved of something like that. Each person that gets a set will more than likely influence others with posts about the project to bring awareness for it. That is where it gets kinda hazy.

I kinda know the answer of what the admins here will say already to be honest. Lol. But it was a cool idea nonetheless.
If it was board-wide we would have to ban ourselves lol.

Ya self ban is a real thing actually. I seen a few long time standing headfiers that give up on audio stuff and do a self ban.

I suppose if your not reading what the latest and greatest is you won't be tempted as much so that makes sense.
My wallet is begging me to just do a self ban already for crying out loud!

In other news, this evening's IEM of choice is the Butastur.

Here is a $30K plus headphone amp? Could you imagine what your Wife would say, if it was bed side? 2F56831E-4648-496A-A5BB-76C647CF6044.jpeg

If she found the pricetag, then it, me and the rest of my audio gear would be curbside, not bedside!

All of said gear also listed at full price valuation in the divorce papers. Extremely unfair, since I'm sure I made a point of how much cheaper they were on sale, when she interrogated questioned me about them!:triportsad:

Ouch. Twice the price of the DTE900. Tough sell.
My thoughts exactly.
Only $850 extra for 2 additional ESTs!!
That being said, we have no idea how it's tuned.
But as you mentioned: "tough sell."

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Why bother when Monarch MKIII and Prestige LTD exists for much less?

Wonder who decided to jack up the price that much.

If they sold it around MMK3 pricing, people would be interested, especially if HBB or other reviewers hyped it up (they haven't yet). Maybe they didn't want this set to cannibalize MMK3 and Prestige LTD sales...?

Only $850 extra for 2 additional ESTs!!
It's 2 extra BAs, not ESTs. Same amount of ESTs (4). 2 extra BAs helping the DD with low end and sub-bass.

Still ridiculous pricing though. :smirk:

Ouch lots of drivers but that's steep for a unproven "brand" unless they leak who else ZiiGaat makes IEM for as a OEM
Inquiring minds want to know!
