can someone explain massdrop?  basically they give people an option to vote for something that will be at a reduced price as long as it gets the most votes, then they contact the company to see if they're willing to do the deal?  this in turn helps the company get a large order and helps the consumer get a lower price?

That's basically it. It seems like they try to get close to or at wholesale price depending on quantity ordered.

I bought one back when they were $5. To be honest, had I known it was pure plastic, I wouldnt have bothered picking it up in the first place. I dont like resting my more weighty headphones on them since the platform tends to dig into the headband. For $4 more, you can get a nice wood banana stand that does a better job.

Yeah, I got mine for $5.  I like it, as works great with my lighter headphones, like the Digitech Pro Monitors.
