I think you ought to ask whether the $400 headphones sound as good as the $1000 headphones or rather that the $1000 headphones sound as bad as the $400 headphones. Big difference.

As long as the HE-400 is hyped up the way it is, there is no need for discounts. An unfortunate reality for the consumer. The only serious competition within this price range is the HD 650 which has been around for years and comes with its own pricey amplification requirements and perhaps the AKG lines which also don't compete directly with regards to sound signature.

This problem has been exacerbated since the cease of the D5000, because that was the closest thing to the HE-400. Now it's unjustifiably expensive new or used.

Ergo, only after real competition arrives at the $400 price point can we expect see any price reductions.

Philips Fidelio X1 was looking like a good competitor - But availability is an issue, and they are selling the AV business to Funai Japan

This is truth, much to much money on the lady, but I managed to get her a pair of white (she finds it prettier) M50s for 100 new in box so that worked out well...

Hey guys.  Other than cosmetic details and removeable cable are there any differences to these from the K701,K702(regular edition), or the Q701 that you would hear sonically?

TLDR: There's a bit more emphasis on bass while remaining tight. It brings the sounds from the mids and highs together nicely for an excellent all around headphone. Some have said that they're a bit warmer and more musical than the Q701 as well.
