I think you ought to ask whether the $400 headphones sound as good as the $1000 headphones or rather that the $1000 headphones sound as bad as the $400 headphones. Big difference.
As long as the HE-400 is hyped up the way it is, there is no need for discounts. An unfortunate reality for the consumer. The only serious competition within this price range is the HD 650 which has been around for years and comes with its own pricey amplification requirements and perhaps the AKG lines which also don't compete directly with regards to sound signature.
This problem has been exacerbated since the cease of the D5000, because that was the closest thing to the HE-400. Now it's unjustifiably expensive new or used.
Ergo, only after real competition arrives at the $400 price point can we expect see any price reductions.
