Okay, here is the HE-400 situation:

It has a "Minimum Advertised Price" of $399.  So, no one can have a "sale" on the HE-400.

In the threads, it is frequently mentioned that if you email a particular store, they will give you 10% off, but that store also has a policy of not allowing returns on any item that is discounted (unless it is defective).   If you think about it, this makes no sense.  If a discounted headphone is returned, there is no profit.   If a full-price headphone is returned, there is no profit.  There is no difference.  In fact, they lose more by accepting back the full-price headphone, because they are then giving up a bigger profit.

Anyway, other sellers of the HE-400 have been known to give a private discount, so you can ask any of them for a discount and see what happens.   They just can't advertise that they are doing so.   And most of those will apply their normal return policy even if they do give a discount.

not tracking with your logic. IF they give the discount and don't allow the return it makes up for the hit of having to ship them twice plus open box discount. Selling for the full price gives them a return cushion. Plus more people than not keep their purchase the first time so it is a cumulative gain.

Either way it works out about the same for them.

Okay, take specific examples:

Customer 1 - buys it for full $399 and returns it, store refunds $399 - net transaction is $0

Customer 2 - buys it for 50% discounted $200 (!) and returns it, store refunds $200 - net transaction is $0

That retailer who does not allow returns on discounted new items is just using that as an excuse to minimize his overall returned item costs.   In actuality, the retailer would do better if he only allowed discounted new items to be returned, and not allowed full price items to be returned - lol - as you can see above, the amount refunded is bigger for full price items.

As you implied, returns are an overhead cost, just like wages and electricity, and in actuality, a high-volume low-markup retailer can accept returns just as easily as a full-price-only retailer.  And, in fact, the most famous low-markup retailer - Walmart - has one of the most lenient return policies in retailing.

No, it's still $105. You just have to choose the Amazon link to the right. It's temporarily out of stock at the moment but you can lock it in at that price if you're willing to wait.

I think you're looking at it from a consumer perspective. If you were only to offer a return policy on discounted items, you'd be run out of business quickly; since you'd be attracting unsure buyers with a higher likeness to return an item.. Where the person requesting the 10% discount already understands they are forfeiting their right to return perfectly functioning goods; and are likely more commited to keep it anyway. I think its a smart business strategy; it benefits both end-parties

How much are you willing to pay to have them now? How long are you willing to wait while hoping the price is better?

Good question, I'm willing to wait until I have a better amp in which to power them. I'm not really part of the Senn band wagon but good headphones are good headphones right
