The 701 would be the logical progression from the 272, if you like them and just want an upgrade. Of course, then you have to ask how much are you really upgrading going from 272 to 701. I'd say enough if you know you like the higher end AKG sound.
 
The others are drastically different headphones. Senn 600 are a dark headphone, which isn't a bad thing, but you may not like them at all coming from AKG. Their weight, sound-wise, and general musical texture can me mistaken for sluggishness and muddiness if you don't get into the sound.
 
I don't know much about the Denons

I love Denons, but I love smooth, bassy, and a touch of bright. And that euphoric effect they do so well. Good all rounders, still prefer the K242HD for rock/metal.

The Q701 do rock amazingly IMO, depends if you mean David Bowie-like Rock or something more bass-dependent.

I suppose that is true, rock can vary wildy. But the general consensus is rather not.

I don't think so. I think it may be a pricing error, however. If not, this is an incredible deal. I bought mine new for $270 from razordogs and really enjoyed the sound. I don't think it ever received the attention it deserved, and the little bit it did get was about its unbelievably high thd.

I tried the 600 and it didn't work but I got the $340 for the 650. Now I really have some thinking to do....of course my birthday in is in two weeks and Christmas is in a month......??

The HD-25 II is $149. It doesn't match Amazon's lowest historical price, but it's not bad.
