I think out of all the headphones out there, I'm most interested in the HD600. It isn't insanely priced, and it's consistently praised as a solid option with a great tonal balance. The only thing I might be worried about is a lack of absolute treble extension, but I'd have to hear a pair to know for sure.

Or you could try a Balanced dt 880 out of a balanced Tube, I would think that would beat the HD 600

Stock dt880 beats the hd600 imo, no need to balance it. Had the hd600, don't miss it one bit.

Still... balanceing does wonders for headphoes imo. The "Bright" balanced NFB 10ES2 welll added some real nice mids and bass to the dt 880 :O and it smoothed the treble a little. So I found balanceing = epic for headphones...

That is good to know, I pondered the HD600's as a lateral headphone to have... I need at least one pair of Sennheisers in the stable.

What I really need is a comfotable closed pair that sound as excellent as the DT880's, you know for times that the TV or the wife is too loud.

AUDIO TECHNICA W 1000 X... I take it you missed my quest for the CLOSED Dt 880!

Well here are some options

the Sound Magic REV 1 sounds close as well...

but honestly the w1000x sounds so much like the dt 880 out of a clean amp, that I almost sold my w1000x... and trust me dude... after mods and L3000 pads the w1000x have a very simmilar sound signiture! Only with the right amp [cuz the w1 she's a picky lady] does she gain her intimate magical closed gorgoues sexy sounding nature! The Hm801 makes a nice differeance for the w1000x. While the 880 out of the 801 is warm er... it lacks teh intmacy of the w1000x

BUT that said... the w1000x would be a good option. Pair it with a nice clean solid sate, or the HP 100 REV 1 [some time in 2012, as later revisions have more bass] are another great option. There is also the Shure 840, but that requires some modding to get close to the dt 880 osund as well

I'd recommend the hp 100 Rev 1 for a closed dt 880 sound without any modding. I liked them very much. A simmilar brigt sound with [smoother than the 880 mids] and more sub bass [but a smidge less mid bass]

That and they isolate like a mug :D... isolation... is something the W1000x kinda do [they are much better than a open]

How does the W1000X's treble compare to the DT880's? I really enjoyed the sound sig of the DT880's when I listened to them, especially in the upper regions, but for isolation purposes open/semi open headphones don't really work for me.

Thanks Bro from SC!

The w1000x's are a little too spendy for me, plus I am not interested in moding them or a having to slap on a pair of $100 pads to get a perfect sound. I am also not a big fan of those ATH "Wings" on the headbands, the w1000x's are probably an amazing headphone but not for me.

The SoundMagic's though I will look into, they are a reasonable price and have a detachable cable which is a plus. The Shure 840's I am not interested in at all nor the 940's even though you didn't mention them. (The pads I will take off of either to use elsewhere though.)

Yes Isolation is the key and thanks for the recommendations!

They both share a simmilar treble imo, Keep in mind my are Modded and have L3000 pads, I've forgotten how stock sounds q.q

Modded though, the w1000x has a little more lower body, and a slight dip in upper mids, but the treble is well extended. Bright like the dt 880, the dt 880 has a slight focus more on the upper and central mids, over the low mid and bass. ALthough the open dt 880 has a tighter lower end [not by a whole lot] BUt after Purrins mods and some L3000 pads you've got your self a closed dt 880 imo. Best though to pair the w1000x with a clean amp to get all the detail and clarity out of it. That said it is like $350 used, $450 if u buy the pads new so.... for about $500 ish dollars there might be better options xD but as far as closed cans go... I've not found anything to beat the combination of clairty sound stage, 3D presances and intimacy in the w1000x... OH WAIT tere is the Kenwood KH1000. Some of the w1000x guys like the KH as well. THey are like $300 ish [new] and no mods to be done there!

Thanks Bro from SC!

Interesting, thanks. By a clean amp, do you think a solid state would be better? I know tube amps tend to color sound a bit, especially the budget/mid-fi ones.

And why is that then?

Because I was going for Brooko's "mid-fi trifecta" The DT880's, Q701's and the HD600.

Well this is a comment made based on the thought that "Stock Dt 880 beats balanced HD 600" so for those who want the warmth of the HD 600 on the 880 there is tubes! Not guessing or rather, I'm commenting based on a prestablished opion :D but good point! Hank you sir and shame on you for defedning the HD 600! On the Beyer Thread <3 for that we might hang u

OR you could hit up my trifecta of DT 880 HE 400 and W1000x :D

ACtually the HE 400's are getting sold... I don't listen to a lot of techno any moar and when I do WANT THAT BASS it's at campus in which I need CLOSED headphones.

That said, the DT 880 is nice with vocals... but after listening to the W1000x for like a week solid by it self... the dt 880 lacks the intmacy of the closed w1000x meaning YAY my w1000x will get some HOME TIME FINALLY. That and the NFB 10ES2 kicks the hm801 in the REAR for details retrival

So yea I'm excited!
