Honestly with some modding I find Beyers in general really shine, shows you just how good their drivers are.

Yes indeed. This chart seems to agree as well. Makes the Tesla line feel like more of a marketing ploy than a real step forward.

dt 880 (not the 600 one) and Philips X2 might be the better ones. Choice also depends on you amp. None of those phone listed (except for dt880 perhaps) are good for tube amps that do not use an output transformer.
Thank you! I think I will go with dt 880, but I am afraid of treble fatigue with the E10k, there is any budget tube amp that would tame the treble? (under 100) Or the O2 amp, is able to do it?

Measurements won’t tell you what the drivers are capable of, it’s just how the headphones are tuned at that moment. The Tesla drivers are an improvement overall in terms of what they are capable of.

Recently snagged a pair of near new DT880 600 Premium at a great price. So I've been listening a few days, and comparing to my DT880 250 Pro. Have been shocked at the sonic differences. Like two completely different model or brand headphones. Amp is a Woo WA6+, no powerhouse, but adequate, and detailed/smooth.

The Premium sounds light and lively, with a slightly "tizzy" top end, very controlled across the board. The Pro has a more natural top end, along with truer timbre; saxes more woody. Closer to higher-end cans in this system.

Something I think I should correct before any more comparisons are the pads. The Pro pads aren't worn out or ratty, but they look "tired" compared to the Premium pads. Measuring shows they are at least 1/8" flatter.

So a question for those with lots of DT experience - the pads should be the same, right, the Pro shouldn't put the drivers closer to my ears?

Thanks!

The pads are simply more compressed on the Pros. The Pros greater clamp makes the pads compress much faster and the pros will sound less airy and fuller simply due to the stronger clamp and more compressed pads. Pads are the same when new. Hold the Premiums tighter on your head while listening to a song simulating a stronger clamp and they should sound more similar.

Good inexpensive tube amps are not hard to find, the Dark Voice 336 SE is a good example. However, tube amps have a hidden cost: you need to find good tubes for the amp chosen. People, especially including myself, often go too far and spend too much on tubes unnecessarily. Educate yourself a little by reading/asking in forums can help you reduce the tube cost.

As far as I know the only amp called a E10K is a solid state FiiO device :p

You would recommend the dt 880 for acoustic, folk, indie rock, hip hop, Edm, lol, for everything?

I can't decide between grado sr80e, sen hd599, akg701, dt 880 (250), Philips shp9500 and X2 :/ they all have raving reviews. I will use a e10k as amp.
I can recommend you the Beyerdynamic DT 250, or DT 150 + DT 100 velour earpads.

Just wanted to say I recently purchased a Keces DA-131.1 DAC to pair with my Keces HA-171 amp and the sound from this setup running the DT880 is truly amazing!
The fine gentleman I purchased the DT880 from emailed me sometime later and said if you ever think of upgrading contact me and I'll try to talk you out of it...
