what are your impressions on the full alluminum vs. stock MS2i?

They are the stock drivers until Rhydon solves the durability issues with the coating on the modified drivers. I never owned stock, so I can only compare to my HF-2s and a friend's HF-1s. I have to say though, at the moment, they are more like what remembered of HF-1s, but (remember this is with stock drivers) probably too bright, though this isn't a problem in my rig, except after a few hours of listening.

It's not as bad as it looks, and forgive me that I'm newish to Grado. Rhydon emailed me to suggest that the whole thing is based around the modified drivers -- the fit which requires the screws, and the sound, so preliminary impressions don't represent the complete mod and how it will perform. Anyway, after spending some time looking at the cable, I don't think the rubbing, which wont occur often, is an issue. The angle i held them at is an unusually extreme one. If I were Rhydon, I would consider an extra layer of heatshrink around the cable there for best results, but I'd be surprised if it took less than a decade to rub through the Grado industrial PVC around the wires. He could, I suppose, just have that point cut through entirely, like the HF-2, though he might not want to lose the rigidity of a complete ring.

Then the cups would be pushed the other way, away from the more useful angles for sitting on one's head. Also, the rods are angled, so you can't reverse them without screwing up the positioning of everything.
Anyway, the whole cable thing is close to a non-issue and more just my not being used to Grado designs and being good at picking out possible issues in things.
