Depends who you ask. I've heard some people say they're polar opposites while others say that one is the in ear version of the other. I haven't heard the MDR so I have no opinion.

Both th900 and the MDR are all very bass focused kind of gears. However, both have a very different bass quality and presentation for sure, as much as everything else

They are not alike. IER-Z1R has much better resolution than the MDR-Z1R. Bass is also tighter with better control.

Which tips are they and do they go as deep ass the Etymotics with tripple flange ?

They do extend out more than the stock tips, but they stay securely in the ears with no change in sound during movement. If I use the stock tips, I have to hold or push them in and when I release the hold the sound changes. Anyone that have used the Etymotic know what I mean.

The sound is stable, full, smooth, and intimate.
