Sony EX1000 Review and Impressions Thread (with comparisons to FX700, GR10 and e-Q5)

I have both and to me, the Dunu Luna is most suitable as a successor to the EX1000.

(DF-compensated; red = EX1000, blue = Luna)

Interesting observation, because for me at least, Luna is not able to improve on 2 things that the ex1k is so compelling at, its openess and ability to displace air without bass boosting. Also, perhaps i am not a fan of the Be timbre (i noticed it with the Utopia as well) there is a brittleness/thinness in the upper mids that i found more distracting than the “dreaded” ex1k peak. Ymmv, ofc.

Well, I have to mention that I use a subtle damping mod to attenuate the high mids on the Luna:

I have no complaints whatsoever about bass on the Luna. Biggest difference to me is soundstage, the Luna is not quite as wide as the EX1000, but renders a deeper stage.

I just wanted to check in with my 'new' EX1000... Quite a surprising earphone. I expected it to be piercing but it's actually quite tolerable and not sibilant. Maybe just a tiny tad behind the IER-M9.

Any recommendations on a balanced 4.4mm cable? I think the 3.5mm that came with it is really good but will want to play around with a balanced cable at some point.

Cable A1, A3 or A6 are my default recs. (Check my database for more info)

You also need an mmcx to EXK adapter.

thanks for the recommendations.
i saw these adapters as well... was wondering if these or the slightly longer stem ones were better.
I have ordered the ones I linked above. So cant comment personally with them.

I bought the angled MMCX adapter and Sony IER-Z1R balanced cable.

I wonder if it would be good to match the resistance of the original cable. any resistance measurement of the original cable?
I can also order the adapters and try using the M9 cables, if the MMCX fits.

What are good ear-tips that can be used with them these days? I'm still using Complys... but am tired of constantly blowing money to replace them due to my oily/waxy ears...
I'm using the triple comforts from Sony. No perceived change to me, just helps them stay in my ear better. Comfort level is more or less the same as the stock eartips as well.

Also, I think I may have stumbled upon a good amp pairing for the EX1000.

IMG_2086.JPG

Here's my take on this compared with the TU-HP01, and the Fiio A1.

Ipod 5g+LOD mod+Fiio A1 = By itself the amp is like any decent SS amp, doesn't change the sound, dead quiet. It's in this default setup to fix the known HP out issue with this Ipod. Difference vs stock Ipod HP out, cleaner treble.
Ipod 5g+LOD mod+TU-HP01 = disappointing tbh, higher noise floor, no perceived positive change in sound quality, rolled off ends. Tried with 2 default opamps, and a MUSES02. Skip this.
Ipod 5g+LOD mod+TU-HP03 = immediately noticed a slightly bigger soundstage, smoother presentation while still maintaining detail. It kinda pushed the mids back i feel, in a good way for me. What it immediately reminded me of is my speaker setup in terms of presentation. Definitely not the kind of sound you expect from an iem, and sorta compliments one of the signature characteristics of the EX1K. Definitely helps if you think the EX1K sounds abit mid forward or shouty on certain tracks. Noise floor typical of a tube amp? To my surprise, none. Used with dual MUSES02 opamp. There was a japanese guy who wrote on his blog the exact same thing when he switched from the stock opamps to the MUSES. Found out about that after I started using this, to try and find other's opinion about this amp (surprising that there's hardly any for such a good tube amp, maybe because it's not a WOO Audio or ALO).

So I finally got my exk adapter.

Enables me to use cable B7 instead of the crappy stock cable with the memory hooks.

I also measured the stock cable and it has a resistance of 0.63 ohms.

Graphed it on stock and also with cable B7. (cable (stock and B7) and adapter (3.5mm -> 6.35mm and 4.4mm -> 6.35mm) are the only factors that got changed.)

Since this is a single DD, even with around 0.3 ohms difference with the cables, it didnt affect the FR. (some slight differences in the treble might be because of the insertion depth/angle.)

Cool. Looking forward to the final look when worn on the ear. I tried that adapter before, a bitch when trying to remove the mmcx connection

I have the similar EXK adapter, no problem to detach MMCX cable. If you do, you can get Final Audio MMCX removal tool.
