It depends on the age and state of conservation of your pair. I made the mod to my older EX1000, that I later sold, and the foam shattered after removing it. In any case, it is possible to replace that foam with a new one, which in any case, I think is the most recommended.
I think you can use a sharp tool to dig it out. Btw I personally wouldn't do that, they disintegrate easily and it's very hard to insert it back in one piece after removal.
I received my 2nd EX1k unit few weeks ago, as I observed my 1st set was not as good as what I read here and the left earphone's spiral thread was broken can't change to fit ETK adaptor. This 2nd unit is so much improve the sound, i.e. clearer and wider , very much detail and neutral (but not boring) as I able to listen to more previously hidden or partially hidden music instruments.
Smooth and comfortable soundstage especially on classical music , it's like i am sitting middle of concert hall and it's like end game to me after trying many variety of IEMs.
One thing want to ask here is if the foam filter is further pushed inside, I can see them with torch light? The foam filter is not flushed with the nozzle as my EX800ST. There's no foam filter on my 1st set.

These filters are a clear upgrades on IER Z1R. But in the case of EX1K, I don’t see the needs to do it. However, lately, my right bud foam is mushy, and now I need to look into replacing it .... sighhh
thanks, but I checked mine both sides foam filters have been pushed 5mm inside , probably by the former owner. Not sure if the sound still the same as recessed?
But first set is without foam filter, it sound quite plain and dull.
Ya, it's good price, remember to ask seller if the foam filters are still there as my first set is without foam filter.
For the 2nd set, I got it around 26000 yen (USD 258) from Buyee.jp including shipping, handling and tax. Good quality and no paint peel off and it looks like new.

Its from amazon, so I can return it if there is any problems....
Not having any foam filters on it will just increase the treble right? I do think I will need to eq it anyway so if thats the only difference it doesnt matter much to me.
On that note I just noticed that my EX800ST (used) came without foam filters lol.
Without foam filter , i find the sound is dull and flat. I don't use EQ that much, usually I will refer the IEM frequency graph as my shortlisted to suit my music genres and taste.
