Sony IEM prices has always been inflated once they have been discontinued, the most famous is the MDR-E484

I see what you mean about the MDR-E484. I had a quick look on ebay just for fun and there are 3 for sale all used of course.
The cheapest one is $925.00 and that`s with the right earbud "lightly dented" :p

All my IEMs / Headphones are Japanese version as well. The pair that I can`t find custom cables for are the MDR-800ST which is slightly annoying. If anyone knows about custom cables for these please let me know^^
I`m currently using the stock EX1000 cable on them which is a great solution for now.

I have never heard the EX600 / EX800 cause all the reviews I read at the time (almost 8 years ago now) said the EX1000 was in a different league in comparison.
I used a stock EX1000 cable re-terminated to 4.4 to use for the EX800ST, it just don't sound right, so I gave up searching.
Actually the EX800ST is for a different market altogether, it was make for studio use and focus on vocal, whiles the EX600 and EX1000 are retail consumes models.
Which is better, really depends on your ears.

Ironically it`s their awesome bass that makes me love them^^

Before I seen a new pair at $5000, and it only cost $60 when released.

Seriously?? That`s the craziest thing I have heard!!
Do you know why it has gotten so expensive / sought after?

Because the E484 at the time was the king of all IEM, but as you know the sound is nothing when compared to the present IEM.

And the EX800ST is the same IEM as my MDR 7550 I believe.

Yes it is.. They named the Japanese version 800ST but it is exactly the same IEM :)

i have a question regarding ex800st, iam using it on wm1a in balanced with a copper cable, i normally listen to it on high gain at 80 or 85 volume and its great, sometimes i crave more volume i go up to 100, the bass just reach another level with a great slam, but the rest of the spectrum loses some clarity and the highs becomes a bit harsh with some distortion.

Anyone else get this feeling ? and is it normal ? i will try some other cable later to check if it makes any difference ..

I use Ex800 and Ex1000, specially the last one, on a WM1A as you, balanced. If I choose high gain, I go around 35-45 volume, and 50-65 on normal gain. It's true that I've noticed that with a better cable that I bought recently (Arete MKIV from Null Audio), I need less volume to enjoy listening. Not only that, the sound has greatly improved in all aspects. The previous balanced cable was one of those selling on Aliexpress and eBay for about 50 dollars

daaamn, 45 on high gain, i must be deaf :D

higher volume just gives me what i crave in bass .. can you try ex800 and tell me what volume you use walking the street or with some surrounding noise, i need to get a feeling of where i stand, but actually under 85 high gain it is just very nice and great synergy with clean sound.

i have some nice cables coming, i will try to cable roll and see if there is any difference, i just want to see if its normal for ex800 to deteriorate a bit on higher volumes, some iems do that.

I don't use them on the go, only at home or at the office, but I'll make the test. What kind of music do you usually listen to? What kind of tips are you using? I usually use them with jazz and classic and use a pair of Spiral Dots, smaller size than I have used with other IEMs.

I switched from the Sony tips to Spin Fits and it tamed the highs a bit, making the treble more bearable for some songs.

If you want to tame the highs, try wide bore tips, like Spiral dots.
