The frequency response graph in the video looks to be quite a step up from the SRH940.  Assuming it is only down 5 dB at 10 hz (tough to tell what the frequency axis marking are), the bass portion is about as flat as I've seen, short of the LCD-2.  However, unlike the LCD-2, the SRH1840 maintains a fairly flat response all the way up through the treble (the LCD-2 is down almost 15 dB by 10,000 hz per the Headroom curves).  These could really be amazing cans, especially for trebleheads - might be a little too bright for some?

You shouldn't compare altered FR curves and raw ones. The ones on Headroom are altered in some defined way (I believe it's because of the HRTF adjustment, blablabla, you can find all the explanations you need here : http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/headphone-measurement-proceedures-frequency-response), while this one looks like an unaltered one. Or else it would be excruciatingly bright. If it's a raw one it looks quite good with a bit more trebles than a pair of HD650 / LCD-2 / HD600. But ultimately, FR curves should only be compared if they come from the same source (i.e., comparison between Headroom curves only or Innerfidelity only). The unaltered LCD-2 curve is almost exactly the same dB at 10000 hz as at 1hz BTW, according to Innerfidelity graphs.

I agree - the full MSRP of the SRH940 appears to be around 40,000 yen ($515), judging by the higher-priced offering on amazon.co.jp, but can be had for about half that on various Japanese web sites.  The US street price is about half that as well.  So, $400-$500 for the SRH1840 may be a reasonable expected street price here.

I hope this will help to finally drop the Sennheiser 600 to a decent level...
These are sexy as hell, but out of my student budget.

The headphone world is brimming with activity, with new product releases happening almost daily nowadays. That barrage of headphone releases is filtered by Head-Fi'ers, with only one in many being of real interest to diehard headphone audiophiles. Here's one that'll make it through even the most stringent Head-Fi'er filters: Today, in Japan, Shure introduced two new open-back headphones:

  1. The Shure SRH1440
  2. The Shure SRH1840

I've had a Shure SRH1840 prototype here this past spring, and received a production version of it last week. It is a very impressive headphone, and I'll say more about it later. (It's the middle of the night here right now.)

I haven't heard the Shure SRH1440 yet, but I expect a production version of it to arrive next week.

If I understand correctly, final pricing is still to be determined.

Here are a few more photos we took, with more photos and impressions to be posted later.

Not digging the look at all. Kinda looks cheap. Hope the sq lives up to the anticipation though and the asking price isn't exorbitant. Trusted brands going at it in the vacuum of the $500 - $1000 price range will be interesting. Hopefully there's some trickle down tech from the existing flagships to these new models.

I have SRH840s and HD650s sitting in front of me. It's like they made babies.

Odd that it is on the Shure Asia site - but the US site (and I live only a 1/2 mile from their headquarters) has nothing.

Edit: found it in the coming soon/news area (whereas the Asia site lists it among the regular headphone listings).

Curious to see final pricing, reviews, and of course, shipping dates.

It says "Available Winter 2012" That could mean January/February (YAY) - or nothing until late November/December... (BOO)
