Though I will say that the SRH940 weren't too far behind... which is saying a LOT about a $300 pinned against a $1500 monster.

There was a vehement debate on this.  Lot of people saying that comparing to the hd800 to SRH940 is just an insult. And some guys defending that the gap is not enough big to justify the price difference (oldshoe  , dalethorn ...). Anyone willing to relaunch the debate ?

Aren't oldshoe and dalethorn the same person?

Why don't you just listen to both and draw your own conclusions?  I'm not sure how the opinions of others on something as subjective as this should be instrumental in your decision.

Can't test unfortunately the hd800 . But when Shotor102 says that the hd800 are not great for pop/ rock, I  recognize a  similarity with the srh940

My HD800s sound great w/ pop and rock and every genre.  Maybe his pair is broken or it's user error.  My ears tell me the 800s have more bass than the 840 and the measures show the same against the 940 and 1840 as well.

How could you verify that ? Dalethorn said no.

Several head-fiers have claimed they're one-in-the-same, and they seem to express many of the same views. For instance both seem rather obsessed with the SRH940 (versus the HD800) and the Beyerdynamic DT48. Considering oldshoe was banned, it wouldn't surprise me if dalethorn would deny being him.

I can't personally verify it either way, and it's really not worth getting into TBH. I merely bring up the possibility since there's speculation, and both are being cited as separate sources for opinions as to the SRH940 being on equal or nearly-equal footing with the HD800.

I am not sure if the head-Fi meet I am going to at the end of April will have any of the new open Shure's but I will have my 940 with me and I know there will be 3 HD800 on hand so I will be doing my own direct A/B comparisons and may see if some of the members at the meet are willing to make their own notes and post their opinions on the subject.

To the few members that seem to have the 1840s, which amps are you using
to drive them? (even though I don't think they'll need any...)

I think I'll stop buying headphones for a while and concentrate on a decent amp...

Thanks.

So far, Dynahi, M^3, Apex P/V, and the super-cheap Musiland 02US, all with surprisingly good results. They're quite forgiving and play well with a lot of different gear (unlike the SRH940).

Love using my SRH 440 with my zune, has a quite lush but very detailed sound unlike paired with my 3g Ipod which sound very harsh and 'digital'. The 440 also has a very nice soundstage for a sealed can, how do the new open shure's sound in comparison to the 440's? :)

They're in a different league altogether.

Thats a give considering the massive difference in price, I was just wondering whether these would compliment an HD558 with the foam removed and a DT990 pro. I was actually thinking of a D5000 then AKG q701 and now this after getting the SRH440s that is :)

They can never be in a great league for me with the amount of bass on offer- but I guess we all hear differently and have different preferences.   If I was to keep them, I'd have to use EQ, not just down low but further up too.  Will probably return them tomorrow.
