Sennheiser Q&A: HDV 820 Digital Amplifier

Ya your numbers are accurate. I don't get what the 12 watts with nominal use is. You never used the HD820 in balanced mode?

Im guessing its ok with planars but probably not ideal.

No no I use it only in balanced, just that store where I went to try some headphones had no balanced output lol bumer. I can tell you hdv820 is way better in balanced mode it has better performance and its noticeble.

Anyone who has heard the benchmark Dac3 to the HDV820? Which is the better all in one unit ?

Power *consumption* does NOT mean output power. And nominal does not mean nominal use.

It means how much power the amp requires when fully driven and putting out its full rated power.

Got it thanks.. its 900 mw at 300 ohm.

Hi @Sennheiser

Can the HDV 820 drive ~13 ohm cans like MrSpeakers AEON Closed? These have a ruler flat impedance.

What's the power output at ~13 ohms?

Also, for an analogue input, does the signal remain analogue through to output or is it converted to digital?

Thanks in advance.

I am also interested in this question since the manual states that the minimum headphone impedance is 16 ohms.

I am also curious about the physical size and weight. I see some reports that the HDV820 has different case dimensions to HDVA600600/HDVD800, but the manual states that the size and weight of HDV820 is identical to the older amps.

Yes, it will drive them just fine. I had the HDVD820 and AEON for review in consecutive months, so I used them together frequently. HDVD 820 adds a very nice sense of body and weight. The linear impedance and high sensitivity offset any potential issues with damping.

Thanks. Were you running the Aeons in single-ended or balanced configuration? I have 800S but looking to pick up the Aeons to keep the wife happy:)
Currently using HDVA600 with Violectric V800 DAC. Do you think the HDV820 would be a substantial step up?

I ran them in both configurations. Hard to really comment, as the balanced cable was a much higher-end cable.

I really can't comment much on the DAC & amp switch - that's a complex switch with a lot of sonic variables. Only someone who has made the same switch could say for sure.

The HDVA 600 and HDV 820 both have balanced amplifiers, but the HD 820's amp section is a completely new design. The chassis is also smaller.

Hi Senheiser, what are the dimensions of the HDV820 chassis? The published user manual states that the dimensions and weight are identical to the HDVA600

Hi - trying to upgrade firmware on MacOS, it says firmware version 0.02. The package is also pretty small compared to the Win version. Bug, or can I safely move ahead?

You already have the newest firmware version (1.00) on your device. Are you trying to downgrade the firmware?

No, then I´m good, thanks. Read version 3.32.7.87 in a PDF, but found out that´s the Win USB software version. Guess i was confused that they pushed a MAC-updater without updated firmware.

Anyway, thanks again, and happy new year, folks!
