Orthodynamic Roundup
Jan 29, 2013 at 4:05 AM Post #21,004 of 27,138
After acquiring yet another pair of HP-3 (thanks to Kabeer who spotted them in Rome on local ads), I decided to thin my arsenal a bit and have put up my TDS-15 for sale, as I don't have the time or patience to find or make a set of new pads.

Thread members have priority, if you want to propose a swap send me a PM.

Greetings everyone.

I'm currently searching all information about is\ortho I can find. This thread is a whole lot of information inside, thanks everyone!
I was talking with dBel81, he suggested me to post here... As I also have some question to a veterans of this thread, so I through It's time to create a account.

Atm I'm a proud owner of TDS-5m (3 driver pairs), TDS-15 (according to a new information on Russian forums, they can be in-depth modded to be able to compare with LCD and HE ortho's, so, ludoo, you may want to reconsider selling them), TDS-7, YHD-1, HP-1000 and YH-1000, and lastly YH-5m

Currently I'm trying to dig into a construction of dual-sided (as far as I get it) orthos, i.e. SFI and YHD drivers, where ground hookup positioned near signal one. May be anyone have any pictures of close-up in both sides?
My questions is - how both sides are connected in the center, and are spirals mirrored or not?

Also a little bit about TDS-5(m). I can assure the drivers of them was not made in Germany. Early TDS-5 was made purely from Japan parts, but pretty quick production was settled on some USSR factories. Yes, possibly there was some technology taken from PMB as well, but they did not make drivers for TDS.

Also, I want to contribute this thread with pictures of one of the rarest and most interest ortho - Amfiton N25-S. It is about a early-to-mid 90s production. You can find them here - http://s40.beta.photobucket.com/user/Thrakhath/library/Amfiton%20N25%20S
I cant upload them here, seems I need to flood more messages or something.
Thanks for the pictures goes to AlexNSK and ssnorry from Russian community.

Two words about the sound - driver is closed-back by itself, and gives pretty flat response without any additional damping. But the sound is closed and subject to plenty of resonances, caused by closed housing from cheap plastic.

It is written fully in Russian, Im not sure if you can translate it all well. I can try to do it later if I have some spare time. But anyway, you can find it here - http://www.doctorhead.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?f=124&t=15330
Basically in two word. You must take driver completely apart, make all magnets even (grind them, or order new ones) and place it as even as possible. Then make all geometry perfect, and remove (grind) all unnecessary driver housing parts that can additionally interfere the sound waves. Then place it in open housing and make new ear cushions from leather.

Not an easy task for sure. Possibly more complicated than Thunderpants mod. But results must be even better.

Glad to see you here Drakkard, and thanks for sharing those images. I was really intrigued to see the driver construction of the TDS 25-nc

I have never seen anything like this before.

To answer your question of the 2 sides. Fostex communicated in the center - and from this image , it looks like the TDS drivers did the same. I am not sure how symmetric the sides are to one another , I will have to open one of the drivers I have at home and look. ( unless one of our fellow guru's have this answer ready )

very tempting ludoo - I love the way that frame folds down on itself. A complete contrast to some of the modern over built orthos.

I'm not surprised to learn that our Russian friends have zoomed ahead with their mods. Drakkard, the photos are much appreciated, as everyone has said. When you said your friends were getting LCD-2 sound from the TDS-15, I can believe it, but what I primarily want to know is, what was holding the TDS-15 back, preventing it from sounding more like an LCD-2? was it merely attention to details, such as the flatness of the magnet array, or did the designers miss something fundamental?

The TDS-25 is very intriguing. It looks as if the voice coil of a T20 had been stretched outward. I'll bet that diaphragm acts more like a flat plate than a dome. The problem then becomes one of damping the vibrations radiating out from the center so they never come back. Should be easy to do.

Thanks again for visiting us and bringing us this gift.
