Anyone else spent years tracking down a rare vintage headphone?
Yes.
I should have one coming next week that I've been looking for, for almost 15 years.

I have spent many years tracking down various rare orthos over the past 18 years :D.

It's a great feeling when you finally get hold of it and discover it's secrets lost to time.

Some which took me years to find: Yamaha YH-1000, Yamaha YH-5m, Canton KE-500, Victor HP-D90, D35,, Yamaha HP-2 square hole version. and many others ...
It has been a real fun journey.

First of all - many thanks to @Max Choiral for helping to make this happen :beerchug:

Kenwood KH-85 "Planar Drive Stereo Headphones" (unlike Trio KH-85 which says "Plane Drive" ✈️)

They weren't in great condition upon arrival, so I had some work to do.
Flat ear pads :/
Reading totally dead on both sides - the plasticizer in the cable wept and turned all the copper green and brittle.
So I had no choice but to do as much maintenance as I was able to.

FINALLY we can confirm that they are indeed T30 OEMs.
We knew it already... BUT... these are a bit different:
• The baffle acts as the front side of the driver enclosure.
• The cream housing/cups act as the other half of the driver enclosure.

This is why they're so thin! Baffle and housing BOTH double up as driver-housing parts.
Sure it's not the only headphone to do something like that, but it's cool.

The rear grills COVER the magnet holes perfectly.
(the glue on one magnet failed, so I could take this photo demonstrating the grill alignment)

MiniDSP EARS doesn't take reliable measurements at the best of times, let alone on-ear headphones.
So this graph was made with some very suitable over-ear pads (seen in the first photo at the top)

Of course, they measure and sound like a T30/OEMs, and they take tone correction (bass/treble boost) incredibly well.

Got one of my white whales in today, a T50V0!

I love the midrange but the treble is a bit challenging for me. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem for me since I’m very willing to mod but this pair is so pristine that I feel guilty messing with it much.

Here’s how they measure on my GRAS clone:

Gentlemen,

Has any of you ever opened the capsule of an Амфитон ТДС-7? I am looking for the magic trick to open it without tearing down the earpad or using a screwdriver. My tds7 is in like new condition but somehow the left side went silent the other day and I am tring to check the soldering within the capsule. From the vids i found (around 1:30) it seems to me that there is (?) a special move that will let me open the capsule from the back hinge mechanism side without even having to use any tool...

thanks

edit: ooops, never mind, i just had to use some extra pressure :)
edit2: no problem inside, it was the 6.35 jack to 5pin DIN female adapter cable that broke
edit3: still hard to believe what these cans from 07_86 are capable of :)
