Oh wow, we might have found replacement pads for the HP-3/50. A pity none of the materials you are using are available here. We should set up a two-way shipping across the Atlantic, felt from Old Europe, pads from the New World.

BTW, Smeggy the pad in the first pic looks shockingly similar to the K141 pads I sent you last week. I guess then they might work ok for people not inclined to make their own.

There are variations on the true story flying around already, but believe me it was two elephants, luckily both female though.

Oh BTW you have a package going out this morning, a Sigma Pro maybe...?

Oh, and tell Naaman hey for me! I'll get crackin' on his SFI/Darth Beyer reworks, so he can have some Ortho bliss to welcome him home.

I think the YH-100 don't sell for cheap is that while MUCH better modded, they are actually listenable stock.

Ludo,
your package arrived and I think these items will be perfect for the new ball joint mounts I have. Thanks very much.

I also have a cheap lathe chuck arriving today which will make life a lot easier than using double-sided mounting tape to make cups with. Should be fun!

Yeah, how does the sister feel about that?

plaidplatypus and I will be posting a mini-meet thread from Sunday, as soon as he updates the rough draft I PM'd him and returns it to me. I guess he felt obligated to let me try the Sigma Pro out since I bought him breakfast

Will do. I forget if he returns this week or next, but I can always ring his cell phone to find out (if it is still connected)...

HP-50A are damped, recabled, and playing nicely. I definitely like these better than my YH-3, in every respect. Pretty comfy even, and they sound very good. I used Ludoo's HP-3 damping scheme, with the thick wool felt+cashmere. The only issue is I cant quite get the top cable entry on the one earcup to go back into place properly.

You used the Bass heavy HP-3 scheme on the 50A?....

For Ludo, his 50A got overdamped with that scheme, and for me my 50S was underdamped.

Why didnt you go with the 50S or 50A schemes me or Ludo posted?

Uhm, the thick felt on the HP-50? I remember mines were overdamped with that scheme, but I might try it again just to be sure. Unless there are the same variations with HP-50 as with the HP-3, and mines are bass light. Ugh...

Can you take a pic of the top cable entry? What's wrong with yours?

The HP-50A sound great to me with the current damping. I dont remember seeing your HP-50S scheme. I tried the bass heavy HP-3 scheme so I could more directly compare it to my YH-3. Turns out, it sounds better than my YH-3, though that could be because it has better earpads and a much firmer clamp.

Ludoo, I will take pics when I get home.

Lighter scheme for HP-50A is cashmere cloth on the back, then stock foams, then a disc of cashmere cloth or other felt. Use its diameter, and/or add another layer, and/or punch a large hole in the center (if they are overdamped, especially if you use two layers) to tune the sound.

See here.

I have slightly modified that scheme now though, I think it uses maybe 3 polyester discs...(have to double check). And also about 3 or so reflex dots.

It's strange, they need more damping, but they dont technically exhibit more bass than a HP-3 when both are damped well. I love both headphones.

Btw, maybe the HP-3 bass heavy scheme is best for yours, one thing I have learnt is that the HP-3 variant drivers are all v.different, even of the exact same model.

All I know is that I am very happy with the HP-50A with HP-3 bass heavy damping scheme. BTW, how is the clamp on you guys' HP-3 variants? My YH-3 is quite loose, while my HP-50A is nice and firm.

Are you sure your HP-50S scheme is actually any denser than the HP-3 bass heavy scheme? That material looks pretty open to me.

Same for mines: the HP-50A is very firm, on all the HP-3 I've had here (4), you need to manually raise the clips with a small screwdriver most of the times, or they won't close properly. And there's more tolerance between cup and baffle.

Hey, I noticed that too. On my YH-3, I had to use a screwdriver to get the clips to clip back in, and I just push the baffle into place on my HP-50A. The pads are nicer too on the HP-50A, but that could be because I dont think they ever really got used.
