Most overrated headphones?

I also agree with the K701. When I first came to Head-Fi there was so much ranting and raving about them that I almost bought them without hearing them. Then I heard them, and was depressed.

They do look incredibly awesome.

my HD650 are way overrated. their bass is so lean and weak yet slightly bloated its an embarrassment. but, they sound like a sledge hammer next to the flat dead k701 which is just beyond words. the very highest ranking of overratedness.

putting on a phone like the ugly DT150 after these makes you wonder what the fek you were wasting your time and money on. I can now see why some have turfed their R10s in place of the DT150.

The AKG K-701.

It sounds unnatural - especially in the mids. To make it worse, AKG discontinued the fine K-501 and K-1000 and gave us this turkey as a "replacement."

The reason the K-701 is so overrated is because AKG priced it below the other "flagship" headphones, making it attractive to the first-time audiophiles seeking the cheapest top-of-the-line headphone. So we end up with a lot of people who buy the K-701 and it is genuinely better than anything else they've heard. Unfortunately, they've never heard the top shelf headphones from other manufacturers or compared the K-701 to something like a K-501.

Could not have said it better.

Then I'll nominate the LCD-2

... just kidding

, but right now they are the new and popular kid in the block.

For entry level cans, the AD700 are overrated IMO.

Believe so... I wonder how many such threads you can dug out from the birth of head-fi :)

Are any popular cans NOT overrated?

I don't think that 70€ for a great can as the Fostex T50RP is overpriced.

The Sony MDR-7509 HD sounds like real crap and costs more than 160€ in Spain. That's a sample of overpricing, IMHO.

Think my point was, alot of people HATE popular gear - regardless of whether it is good or not..I really cannot see how the ATH-M50 can be classed as overrated.

Because it is supposed to be competitor to the Shure SRH840 and AKG K271 MKII. Both of them are better cans than the M50, several times better.
