Dude compare the price man. the 840 cost almost TWICE as much as m50, this have to mean it should be 2x better. But its not! the improvement is slight with slightly warmer tone but lesser details than the m50. You can have your opinion, but putting m50 in the category as overated is SIMPLY RIDICULOUS. not even one headphone IMHO can match m50 at its price range and for your info M50 is released on october 2007(correct me if I am wrong at the month) whereas Shure's is 2009. In Europe the SRH840 and the M50 cost more or less the same, in the range of 140-190€, depending on the shop.

I tried the HD600/650, thunderpants,LCD2, Grado SR60, DT990, (I think) beyer T1, and a couple other high end headphones at the last Portland, OR meet. Nothing wowed me. I still like my DT770s

I think that's a bit unfair to call open headphones overrated, since you're not supposed to use them in noisy environments to begin with. Obviously, closed cans suit your needs better, but that doesn't really make open headphones in general overrated. Just my 2 cents.

'all open phones being overrated' lol...thats cheating.  Conversly i'm the opposite, I dislike closed which to me are not musical enough, I think air and atmosphere helps.
 
Saying that, I think all closed phones are overrated..to me they are a bit boring! (music wise)

Of course open headphones are going to be underwhelming when you're in a noisy environment (such as a meet). One isn't supposed to listen to open headphones when noise is an issue.

So many things wrong with this post. Sounds like to me you are comparing the wholesale price of the M50's to the retail price of the SRH-840. Hardly fair. Unless you use Ebay and like the chance of getting ripped off, or a fake, you will rarely find the M50's for under $100. The SRH-840 is a bit overpriced usually. I remember a month or two not even finding them for under $199! That doesn't make sense because even earlier then this I got mine as an open box for $135. Shure should drop the price to $150.
 
Why on earth would you think that if a headphone is twice as expensive it should sound twice as good? That's ridiculous! I guess if I buy an HD-800 it will sound at least 10 times better then my M50!
 
I have to ask though, have you tried the SRH-840? I don't see how anyone with both the SRH-840 and the M50 at the very same moment can sit down and listen to both and say the SRH-840 has "lesser details".  To me, the M50 isn't even that detailed of a headphone. Not like the AD700 or DT-880, but that's not always a bad thing.  BTW I like both headphones and have owned both. Obviously, this is just my opinion, so if you think the M50 has more detail, then OK. I just don't agree.

Every headphone over $950 is overrated. They still sound great though and I'm not selling my HD800 yet.


I think headphones like the K-70x, HD650, HF-2 and 880/600 are excellent headphones for the price and offer what I believe to offer the best bang for your audiophile buck in headphones. Especially at typical street prices.


All that said I thought the Koss PortaPro was the most overrated headphone I've ever owned. Fat bloated bass that bled all over the frequency spectrum. Horrible. The RE2 was just the opposite. Tinny, screechy, thin and piercing with no bottom end at all. Terrible.

The Shure 840 is consistently 45%-100% more expensive.  Honestly the 2 are such different beasts it's funny they are always compared to each other.

I agree with this 100%. My idea is that Shure doesn't even want the SRH-840 to compete with them. For that they have the SRH-750DJ, which is more similar in price. Even that's a bit different, but can probably "compete" better with the bass of the M50. If one was to compare the 750DJ and SRH-840, the SRH-840 would definitely be considered light on the bass! The 750DJ has way too much bass (to my ears). I thought it'd be an improvement, but it just felt like an SRH-840 that's much more annoying to my ears, however that's possible. I guess from what I've read, the 750DJ is supposed to be more "fun" or something. As if the SRH-840 wasn't already? It's far from just being a boring "neutral" headphone.
 
The M50 is a better headphone to me overall just due to the fact that it actually fits and doesn't have somewhat harsh highs at times (My sig is based on sound quality only, for anyone that cares). This is one rare headphones that's only slightly better overall to me because of the comfort, fit and low price. I guess I don't buy headphones for ONLY sound quality. But that's 90-95% of it.
