Today, I finaly received my hifiman HE-500! I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed, that is why I need your help.

I'm listening to good mp3s on my PC through my Little Dot Dac 2, and so far was using my AKG-701. I'm not an expert, and I have very few references. Although my AKG sounded a bit weak, I liked the overall airy sound. I listen mostly to female vocals, some bluesy/jazzy stuff, and some light rock.

My hifiman makes the sound creamier, drums and bass are better but honestly I cant say that mids are better, and trebble might be a bit better. On some songs, I feel like the sound is bottled up. On some others I can hear hisses that I didn't previously with the AKG. There is no wow effect so far. If I had to grade both cans, I would put a 7 out of 10 for the AKG-701 and 8 for the hifiman.

I'm thinking that my little dot Dac 2 is the culprit here (let's hope there is a culprit because I really want a wow effect!) and I'm ready to buy an amp. I have 500-$600 max.

Would you rather advise me a Lyr or an EF5? Should I sell my dac ? I sure don't have the money for the Burson 1600-D. Since I live in europe, I cant go to meetings, or try stuff. I need to order from the web only.

A big thank you in advance.

On a positive note, I don't think they are that heavy. I think they are quite confortable. I wish the headband foam was thicker though.

Give it at least a 100 hours burn-in before you start comparing it to anything....

Today I'm been advised to go for a beta 22 or m3. What do you guys think about it?

I never been "wowed" by a good set of cans. Its only the bad ones that wow me for the wrong reasons. The best ones I have had I grew into loving there signatures.

^ I remember it took a few years for me to figure this out. Very important thing to keep in mind.

The R10s are the only headphones that wowed me at first listen because they are that good and are my favorite headphones. On the other hand, it took me a few days before I really began to appreciate how good the LCD-2s were.

If you're wondering about the amp, you could just get RCA cables, feed them from your dac/amp to your/your friend/uncle/thrift store's vintage stereo, which likely has as much power as most headphone amplifiers out there and compare it to your amp.  I'll bet that your amp will hold up just fine.

My sentiments exactly! (Expressed more eloquently that I would have as well)

I just finished reading this entire thread and i think i changed my mind about getting the T1s and will seriously consider the HE-500.

Is anyone using them with the NuForce HDP? I currently use D2000s & HDP with the volume dial at the 1:30 PM position. By how much more will i have to increase the volume to get the same output level with the HE-500? Will the HDP be distorting by then? Thanks.

I use a more powerful amp and for me, my la7000 are at 85db at the 8:30 -9:00 position. The HE-500 to get 85db it at the 10 - 11 position

Sorry, I posted this on another thread, but here I go again:

I'm planning to get some HE-500 by the end of yeat to replace my DT990/600

However I want to ask first... how much they leak?

They are open, and from the pics it seems they leak as much as K702. But I want to be sure.

DT990 is sweet because doesn't leak that much so I can take them to my office (that;s why I don't take K702 there... everybody sings with me)

I know sound is the most important thing, but for me, also this leaking thing, since I use them mainly at work.

That will be factor to decide btw this and D7000 I think :p

They leak more than the DT990.

They leak more then any other headphone ive owned.

LOL

So HE-500 leakage = K701/702?

or D7000 < HE-500 < K702/702 ?

Maybe I can manage more leakage here... but I found that DT990 doesn't leak unless I'm listening at loud volumes
