Hiby R6 Pro II (2023 Edition) - Launch, Hype, Thoughts & More

@Joe Bloggs
Unfortunately, I found another bug. When I use the Hiby Cast program, the screen is displayed in the wrong orientation, and no matter how I change the settings of my phone or R6P2, absolutely nothing changes. Maybe someone knows how to solve this problem so that the screen is displayed correctly. I use Hiby Cast quite often and it's extremely inconvenient.
and this is again an issue with the latest firmware?

(slight aside, at this point I would like to note that HiBy Cast did not exist until early this year and if this feature didn't exist, there would not have been a bug to report...)

and by this I suppose you include changing the orientation of either the phone or the R6?
Unfortunately, any manipulations with changing orientation of the phone or the R6P2 doesn't help. The image remains the same as in my screenshots above

Battery charging fine (at 73%)

Regarding Hiby Cast, it works fine on the iphone.

However, on the R6P2 if you mess around with the Flip and Rotate options, at some point the System UI crashes. If this happens then the Hiby Cast gets stuck in a particular orientation until you restart the R6P2.

If I don’t change the orientation of the R6P2 then Hiby Cast works fine.

Restart the R6P2 and then connect Hiby Cast again, it should be fine.

Don’t change orientation on the R6P2 when Hiby Cast is running, this seems to cause the problem at least for me.

I specifically posted the specifications of my devices next to the photos so that no one would doubt their insufficient power or unsupported standards, everything is written there.
It's possible that our player has issue charging quickly through your particular tester, as others have tested with other testers and reported positive findings. Can you test with a direct connection? Also test with a lower starting battery level as others have suggested?

Also, does the player itself ever report "charging quickly" in any of this?

@Joe Bloggs about the Bluetooth receiver mode stutter I was having, I think I found the problem. This problem happens when I switch codec from AAC to LDAC or vice versa after pairing my phone to the DAP. Simply restarting the pairing and not switching to different Codec solved the stutters for me. There's ~1 sec of lag which seems normal.

All right boys. Seems like today I join the club - the Hiby R6 Pro II is my first DAP, thanks to the good lads over at Zeppelin & Co.

Man I've barely started and this rabbit hole is deep...

OK, here are my measurements… what I can conclude is that power delivered to the battery definitely decreases as the battery charges. I would assume that is by design to protect the battery. There is an odd observation I will make in a moment:

Battery Time V(V) I(A) P(W)
Level
9% 5:07 PM 8.64 1.81 15.64
21% 5:25 PM 8.65 1.8 15.57
32% 5:40 PM 8.65 1.8 15.57
57% 6:10 PM 8.82 1.04 9.17
73% 6:31 PM 8.79 1.09 9.58
87% 6:58 PM 8.92 0.46 4.1
94% 7:25 PM 8.99 0.24 2.16

So charge rate drops some time after 50%. Oddly I had logged faster charging earlier in the day when the battery level was >70%. My theory is that battery temperature probably also plays a role in regulating charging rate. As in the bigger experiment I was charging with a fast charger from a very low battery level some protection mechanism is kicking in earlier to control the charge rate. I will try again in a while to check the values when the device has cooled a bit.

Edit: several hours later, after just letting the player play, I was down to 66%. I tried charging again and I got 8.65V 1.77A. So I am pretty sure the player’s circuitry begins to limit the battery charging not just because of the battery level, but because of something else. I suspect that battery temperature plays a role.

Since I did not previously run this experiment, and I am on the latest firmware, I cannot state whether my player always acted this way.
I ran more measurements today, this time charging with the DAP off and cool. Results are not identical as yesterday’s, but that’s not a surprise if as I speculate temperature plays a role. But the results are consistent, and fit well with the device slowing down charging as the battery is more and more charged, with the knee in the curve coming somewhere between 50% (when battery is warm, for example player on and playing), and 70% charge (when the player is off and cool) where the DAP slows down the charging.

Battery V (V) I (A) P (W)
60% 8.66 1.82 15.76
70% 8.67 1.7 14.74
80% 8.81 1.09 9.6
90% 8.91 0.59 5.26
95% 8.93 0.4 3.57
98% 8.99 0.19. 1.71

Why would the R6 Pro II intentionally slow charging? To protect the battery. HiBy has experienced battery health / longevity issues in earlier products and they are likely working hard to avoid a repeat.

To me it appears the DAP is doing the right thing, and there is no bug associated with charging.

(An alternate explanation… the charger bricks themselves likely also do some management of the charge rate based on what they sense from the other end of the line, such as impedance.)

You nailed one of those devices that punch WAY above its price tag.
I'm going to write a review about it, but basically this is one of those few must-have devices who are "amost" too good for the money!
You'll need to spend 5x to have a (discernible) difference and only if you need to drive very low sensitivity headphones.
