What sound signature do you prefer? Neutral, bright/analytical, warm/bassy?

The best closed backs I've heard are the Maddogs by Mr. Speakers. The perform better than the cheaper denon d2k and even the d5k for that matter. They hit a lot of your check boxes: closed back, comfortable, good reviews, very little leakage, over the ear ect.

They are $300 plus shipping. A good amp to get for these entry level is the Schitt magni/modi combo which runs $200 plus ship...right at your budget and would be an outstanding setup. This gives you dedicated amp and separate dac.

gL!!

Welcome to headfi!! Sorry about your wallet.

The momentum is a good hp for sure, but I'd stick with the MD based on your preferences.

Dynamics don't even compare to planars at your price points. Planars are just....divine!

Please understand for someone getting started with headphones and headfi...you should be aware:

1. There are no absolutes here, for the most part.

2. What some find bassy others call bass light

3. What you dark, I might call bright

When describing sound and the dynamics of sound, judgement will be relative to the describer. My point of reference will be somewhat different than yours based on my hearing, your hearing, our preferences and other things.

So do your research and try to come to a decision about spending your money based on lot's of opinions and reviews. Audition for yourself if you can and check the return policy.
