Hi, I want to get into more comfortable headphones that also hit harder if possible with my current dac/amp.
Gaming, Movies and music.  The gaming and movies have a lot of the same sound..Explosions all around, gun fire and so on lol...
 
Music is rock mostly and the grado's do great on my music...could be a bit louder but cant complain on the detail.
 
Was reading about the He-400 and it sounds like a good choice and is at the limit of my current budget..This means zero amp upgrade for a long while....
 
I wear headphones atleast 5hrs a day.

Hifiman HE-400 will work for you.
 
Alternatively, look into Beyer DT770, DT880, DT990; Ultrasone HFI 2400, PRO 750; Denon D2000/5000; AudioTechnica A900X.

There are diff versions of the Beyer..some high ohm and then lower ohm...Which one is better for my D1 Dac amp? that 250ohm or the 80pr less ohm.
 
So, I know which to look at comparing to the He-400
 
Guess I just assumed the 400's were best in it's price class with all the feedback but I will check the others out

You'll want the lowest impedance possible with the Beyers if using the Audioengine D1. It's power output will put about 12mW into 300ohms, so a little more into 250ohms. Not that good. But at lower impedance, like the HE-400, it will put about 100ish mW into 32~35 ohm impedance headphones. That's ok. Orthos do enjoy a lot more current than that, but it will function.

The HE-500 is the best in its price class.  The HE-400 is one of the top contenders in its, along with cans like the DT 880 and Senn HD 600 & 650.

Much as I love my DT880s, I am not too crazy about the souned of them from any Solid State amp I personally own. But I think they sound fantastic from my Tube headphone amp.
 
However they do sound fantastic from an Audiolab 8000CD headphone jack.  Too bad I am talking about a $1200.00 CD player.

Bottom line is they can be finicky when driven from SS amps......they may sound rather bland.
 
However:  YMMV!
 
 
How about higher end Grados?

If you goto razordog deals and contact the owner he can probably get you under $400 on the Senn HD650s.

The gateway to the higher end Grados is the RS2i at $500.  While I have not tried them for gaming, the RS2i has a large sound stage--unlike the SR's.  I suspect that they would perform well in that role.

After reading reviews the ULTRASONE HFI-2400 sound like they would work...Comfy(cant find if they touch the ear or not) large sound stage for movies/shooter games.
According to someones post the 880 goes around the ear and is very comfy. So, damn...I dunno what im gonna do.($230 vs $349 vs $399)

I have not found the HiFi2400 to have a very large sound stage, especially for an open or semi-open can.  It's fun, has slam and strong bass.  It is very comforatable.  However, it is not going to give you the clarity, accuracy and sound stage of the DT 880.

I will say this about my DT880: they are ultra comfy.
And uber accurate.
They give you a massive taste of T1 sound at 1/4 the price.

Alright, it sounds like the DT880 32ohm are what I will get. It seems to meet everything that is important for what I use headphones for atm.
 
Thanks for input..oh found the He-400 for $375 shipped but everyone seems to say DT880 for me..

I would not recommend the DT 880 below 250 Ohms.

Man, you guys have me confused again.. In my original post I said I only have a D1 to drive my headphones and will not be able to upgrade an amp till Christmas or later.
