hd25-1 impressions thread

My HD25 has a balanced cable, and I listen to them through my CLAS db/Rx Mk3 combo, and my HiFi-M8.  A little more power goes a long way.  And I know many would scoff, but replacing the stock "crap" steel cable with copper or silver plated copper really helped control and tighten the bass...

I agree with the cable. Having replaced my steel cable with a copper one made a difference. More refinement and details while "improving" the treble. It is still bright but sibilance is reduced. Would love to have the same setup but one step at a time.

Sadly I sold my HD25, ever since I changed the pads I couldn't shake a slight channel imbalance so they went on eBay rather than persist correcting the issue.  Amping definitely brought them to live offering a stiffer backbone, refinement and detail retrieval improved, like you said it brought the dynamics and bass impact upfront. I cannot recall if the mid-range changed position, it was too short a time and too long ago. The best they sounded to me was from Hisound Studio V (2nd Edition). Was a nice pairing.

I might pick them up again one day.

Thank you for the reply. Was thinking of having a portable tube amp to pair with my HD25.
Did that PA2V2 help much with the high's?

Yes sir! Same sound signature but a bit more refined. It is noticeably speedier and smoother treble. It can still get sibilant but noticeably less.

That's great news because I am going to order one next month.

I am using the xonar U3 right now with them and it's pretty good. Just need an amp to get a cleaner signal with tighter bass and cleaner treble.

These are incredibly balanced headphones, For me they are the "Perfect" headphone I have ever used and I can't wait to try these on an amp.

Below is a photo of my old set of HD-25s. I gave them to a friend several years back who long story short travelled the world and had the time of his life (continues to do so). He loved these headphones, and they went with him everywhere, through rain or shine and even through a serious vehicle accident which he survived. The headphones bare all these scars. He was still listening to them in the state they were in when I got them back from him.

This is a man who enjoyed the heck out of the HD-25, probably more than anyone who has worn them before. Seriously, from Europe, to South America, India to remote area of the planet he danced, cried and had an occasion of which music played a key part.

One day I am going to pimp this old pair to the stratosphere and give them back to him for a new adventure.

Cameo by recently acquired Amperiors.

A nice story to round off my afternoon and start off the evening! Glad to see them withstanding the test of time admirably, but the pads look understandably worn out on those HD25-1 iis!
What cables are you guys using?
Thanks.

Simple aftermarket oyaide copper cable on my HD25 ALU.

Guys whats the difference between the basic edition hd25 that is sold in europe for 150 and the others that cost about 200? Besides the lack of velour pads, the bag and and the made in ireland print they are exactly the same?

Cheers....

Besides the missing bag, the made in ireland print and the velour pads..... they are the same right?

If they are the same sonically.... the basic edition is a no brainer.... i would like mine to have the made in ireland print because i always watched them on djs and etc with that print (its like part of the legend.... XD), but almost 70 euros for a bag, a made in ireland printing and a bag???? Its a no brainer for me...

I emailed that guy about a custom length cable for my HD-25 and he won't even respond.

I'm having the same issue currently.  This is a part time business for Brian, as he also goes to school for electrical engineering.  Not making excuses for him, just saying its not just you...

When I got my new old stock HD 25-1 (not II) I got it in a card board box with no accessories - so this is the version for recording studios (where I got it from) and music pros. It's not the "retail" version of the headphone.

Be happy that you can get the basic version so cheap, it's a good deal. I think it's just not meant to be available to consumers and only for the "pro" market. Like the HD 26 "Pro" http://en-de.sennheiser.com/broadcasting-headphones-studio-recording-stage-hd-26-pro

Cheers,
K
