To each his own. I believe the Grado line is fine without amps. For the purpose of volume increase. I’m assuming you are into hearing the headphones sound signature be altered.
Yes, @monousa, Grados can be driven to high volume via DAPs and other such devices. Volume isn’t everything….dynamic range, imaging, soundstage, etc are important. Oh - OK, for some, volume is the only thing….

This setup (especially the DAC) is very transparent, very clean. When I changed from the RU6 to the SMSL, I could honestly not tell much difference, except for the sound being more clean, transparent. But this can be just impression or just the difference between the balanced connection to the Amp as opposed to the double amping that the RU6 (no SO line) was doing with the RNHP.
Anyway, the idea was to get a sound with the least coloration possible, in order to get the transducer original sound, at least as much as possible.
I´m really enjoying what I'm listening. Now, would I prefer it with some coloration? Don't know as I didn't have the chance to compare. In the near future for sure.
Indeed! Such amplifier parameters as: output impedance, dynamic headroom (in dB) at ‘stated’ maximum power, soft vs hard clipping…all affect the amp / headphone interaction, and thus the sound via the headphone.
Any time I see them, they are crazy expensive. I would like to try a change up, but I am not going to pay $500.00+ for two tubes.
The amp sounds pretty great now, but I am curious.
