Differences between Denons (D2000, D5000, D7000)

Like I said, I used Google Music from day one for a week. I noticed the low quality streams and I uninstalled it. It might be 320kbps now and, if that's the case, I need to re-install it.

I would think Google would stream at 128kbps. 96kbps is just terrible.

Mog, on the other hand, streams at 320kbps, but it costs like $2 or so a month. You can try it for free though.

I uninstalled it when I realized most of their stuff was 96kbps. Then again, this was when they first launched so it might have improved since then. Pandora only streams at 128kbps.

Pandora is abysmal after spending most of my time with high quality 24/96 and some 16/44.1.  Literally unlistenable.

I think Denon D5000's are $414 on Amazon right now, and eligible for Prime.  EE is still a better price with GRANDSLAM for $388 though.

My daughter's D2000's arrived today. First impression is they sound virtually the same as my 7000's. I doubt if I could reliably tell the difference between them in a blind test.

If that's the case something is seriously wrong.  It should be even easier if the D2000 is not burned in.

People seem to think the D5k-D7k jump is marginal at best; even some have stated that the D2k is not too different sounding than the D7k..

Not too many who post here and who have heard both the D2000 and one or both of its big brothers (on a decent system).  The D5000 has much more balanced in its EQ; is warmer/smoother/richer  and has a significantly bigger sound stage.

I have heard that some say (and I believe it to be a reasonable point of view) that the difference between the D5000 and D7000 is too small to justify the extra cost.

Not meaning to hijack the thread, and perhaps this would be better served with its own separate discussion, but to my ears, and I have all three, there is only slight difference between the D2000 and D5000. Bigger difference is between the D5000 and D7000. As I posted earlier, the D2000 and D5000 share the same driver. The D7000 uses a different driver and different cable. The SQ is very different on the D7000. Of course one also has to consider source, both music quality and components. One may not hear the same differences as someone else.

Ummm carlson that's wrong, the d5k and d7k share the same cable, and all three share the same driver. That's what everyone else says anyway.

And kiteki man I almost wanna lend you my d7k... Almost, I don't wanna pay shipping twice :p, and I have a feeling you will want to buy them anyway.

Realizing that opinions will differ and that headphones sound different from different sources/amps, here's what Tyll said about the "D" trio in his review:

No, I've had them apart, the D7000 has a different driver than the other two.

both D5000 and d2000 might need some mod to sound the best, while D7000 sounds fantastic out of the box.

Can we ask mod to change the thread title to "The Denon Thread"?

But seriously, does anyone know what tier Denon AH-NC800 sits in? Does its sound compare closer to D1100 or D2000?  I am looking for something active noise canceling first, comfort second, sound third.  Thanks

I would agree with this. Especially the difference b/w d2k and d5k. Only a slight difference really. Bass on the d5k is a little tighter with the same impact. And mids on the d5k are a touch smoother, I guess because of the wooden cups. Takes a trained ear to hear it as it's slight IMO. Not sure that I could pick it out in blind test.

I feel like there's some biasing going on here, given it's a video from Sennheiser, but if it's a completely honest demonstration, it looks like Sennheiser is the way to go. Otherwise, Bose is really the best way to go for ANC and they are very comfortable. I haven't heard the QC15s, but if they're at all similar to the AE2s, then they probably don't sound half bad; overpriced, but not bad.
