I have a pair of AKG Q701 'phones and am looking to buy another set of 'phones.
Does anyone think DT 880s would be a nice alternate headphone?
Or Grado 225, 325, RS2?
I listen to a broad selection of music, classic rock, classic jazz, blues, classical music, some modern pop, Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Little Feat.

Thanks,
C.

those genres have grado written all over them, either one of those 3 would be a great chooice, just depends on your budget..

and now that they're burning in more, the mids have come out more, the bass cleaned up a bit, and the highs became less sibilant and less harsh, so now i've completely fallen in love with my dt 990s

Great review! I just received my DT990/600 a few days ago and can't stop listening to them. They sound great unamped out of my MacBook Pro, to the point where I can't imagine them being any better.

Am I in for a surprise when I hook these up to an amp?

you don't know just how much better they will sound coming out of an actual headphone amp.

600 ohms is too much for a macbook pro to drive directly. you will benefit greatly using an amp.

will add my pro 900s to the list as soon as i get a few more hours of burn-in on them!

Nice review.  I've only used the HD-650s and the k701s.  I much, much prefer the former.

yeah, i like my k701s, but don't listen to them that much. i should tho but still, they're not for everyone.

hhowever, properly amped, the k701s sound amazingly good

Can you expand on your experience with the K701s properly amped (what brands?) and badly amped (what brands don't do the K701s justice?)
thx

Maybe you'll find some T1s under your Christmas tree?

well i still haven't heard too many amps to give any specifics, but from what i've heard with the k701.

most of the full size amps have enough power for the k701s. they require about as much power as 300 ohm headphones (just a little bit less). so almost anything that will work for example, for hd 650s, will work on the k701 as well. i've heard k701s off a music hall amp, a pro-ject headbox amp, an MKIII, and of course, my WA6SE. they all sounded pretty good.

portable amps however, will not do the k701s any good. i have a cheap nuforce icon mobile portable and it doesn't help it much. while it gets louder than directly out an ipod, it will be lacking bass and sound quite thin.

so basically, any full size desktop amp over 200 dollars should work fine for the k701s, with varying results depending on the model/brand.

and i do hope of getting T1's for X-mas

Thanks for the info, I tried some 225, 325 and RS1 yesterday, I really like the 325s, the others were a bit too treble heavy for me.
I'd like to get a pair in the next few months.
They sounded great for rock and jazz.

Edit:
BTW, I have an iBasso D12, I found that with some op amp rolling it sounded quite good with my Q701s, only problem is that some deep bass is lost.
But my Matrix and 336 really sound better.

OK,
I finally broke down and picked up a pair of DT880 in 600 ohms.
I almost picked up the DT990 in 600 ohm instead, but preferred the neutrality of the DT880s.
Right now my preferred amp for the DT880s is my La Figaro 336C which as most of you know is an OTL amp.
Recommended!
