I don't think the HF player app can access network/wifi connected storage yet, the music files have to be scyned to the ipad via in app upload

I agree about storage issue. have you investigated some HD/Wifi enabled solutions like kingston MobileLite Wireless or AirStash.that seems to be a "magic" solution ?
There are a lot of similar solutions from Sandisk, Kingston, Patriot etc.
