I just got my DT250 (250ohm) and I must say they are pretty awesome. Even though they're the 250ohm version my CMOY seems to power them well, with a listening level that suits me using only 30 degrees of the volume control! These are definitely keepers and my new favorite headphone

My beyer DT-250-80 has lasted me about 6 years now, roughing them, throwing them in suitcases and bags with no case. They are probably the most inconspicious and moderate looking fully circumaural can, as well as being the smallest imaginable circumaural. In fact they look damn good to me, not unnatural or goofy on the head at all - probably because everyone has been conditioned to their look by the countless reporters / sports commentators that wear them on TV. In fact in Europe we rarely see any other headphone used for this purpose at all. Now fully broken in, the velour pads are incredibly comfortable, almost feels like they are caressing my skull - meanwhile I am completely oblivious to the existence of a headband on these things.

Another thing to note about the DT250 is that yes, they have some weaknesses, mainly in bass and treble reproduction, yet these weaknesses seem to magically disappear as signal chain components are upgrade. This headphone scales incredibly well. They also have a very intimate in-your-face sound, and do fall short where realistic soundstage is preferred. Finally, I have incredibly sensitive ears, and these headphones have never given me any listening fatigue and I have never perceived nasty sibilance - indeed, their smoothness is another thing that scales with well with ugrades to signal chain.

I bought my DT990 (2005, 250ohm) about 6 months ago and had tried them with Ray Samuels "The Hornet" (SS) and EarMax Pro (tube). Both amps are great, but I seem to enjoy the DT990/EMP combo better. Anyone had similar experience?

I am big fan of Beyer cans. For computer use I have DT770pro. Mostly gaming and playing mp3s with foobar2000.

I only listen to Drum & Bass, Oldskool Jungle and Hardcore, Dubstep, Hip-Hop and Dub with this can.

For Trance, Hard Trance, Hardstyle, Hardcore, GOA/Psy, Techno and House I use DT990pro with Arietta. And obviously for rock, blues, classical and acoustic DT990 is much better than DT770. Although I don't have that many non electronica CDs

Arietta drives them both quite well. 12 o'clock is about max for both. Surprisingly 80ohm DT770 isn't any easier to drive than 250ohm DT990.

Overall I am quite happy with their sound signature. Build quality and comfort is also top notch.

very happy dt990 pro owner here.

question, i'm going to get some beyer either 770, 880 or 990. should i skip the 250 ohm version and go straight to 600 ohm version? my next headphone is going to be dt770.

My DT880's will be here on Friday and I'm wondering if it is worth it to get an amp for it? I will be almost always using it with my Auzen X-Fi Prelude, which is an amazing sound card in it's own rite. I might get a headphone amp for Christmas though, does anybody have any recommendations for an amp around the $100 range if it is worth it. Can't wait until my Beyer's get here! Thanks

Not worth it. better stick with your current one.
otherwise you can get the DT990/880 600.

how/why is that?

I'd agree that, all other things being equal, that the DT990's are better than the DT770's.

But all other things are NOT equal. Mainly, the 770's are closed, and the 990's are open. If you can use an open can, great. If not, the 770's are terrific, and since I personally found the 600 ohm versions of the DT990 and DT880 to be noticably better than the 250 ohm versions, I bet the 600 ohm DT770's are terrific closed cans.

Yup, the 600ohm dt990 makes me scared to touch anything in my setup now for fear of ruining the whole. It's so cohesive now that I can't tell source from amp from headphone. Sure sources have moved on, amps have moved on, but I feel like if I "upgrade" one thing, the sound entire would be ruined.

That's what the 600ohm dt990s have done for me. They've made me say, that's it, I can't do better for what I want it to sound like.

Ordered a pair of DT-880s this morning to upgrade from my Grado SR80s.

Any recommendations for an amp to pair with it? Currently have a Headroom Total Airhead, been thinking about a Little Dot Mk 2++ / Mk 3.
