But all other things are NOT equal. Mainly, the 770's are closed, and the 990's are open. If you can use an open can, great. If not, the 770's are terrific, and since I personally found the 600 ohm versions of the DT990 and DT880 to be noticably better than the 250 ohm versions, I bet the 600 ohm DT770's are terrific closed cans.

I'm not quite with you - I found the 990 treble more damning than the 770 bass. (2005 990-250, and 770-pro 80), and would go with the 770 even if closed/open wasn't a factor. I'd probably go dt-250 over both, now.

I love my dt-250-80 though - I think they are the perfect office cans - ugly enough not to walk away, easy to drive, ok isolation, and nice well-behaved sound, if a bit warm. (I like warm).

I think I hold to them a little while longer.. turns out I quite like the sound they produce and they don't look too bad either

LOL! Cleverly understated reply

Glad you're liking them, and not at all surprised!

Ahhh, yes...but 2 things:

1. The current-version DT770 (not the Pro 80) has a treble more like the DT990.

2. The 600 ohm version smooths out the treble a LOT.

Any recommendations for an amp to pair with it? Currently have a Headroom Total Airhead, been thinking about a Little Dot Mk 2++ / Mk 3.

I loved my SR-80s for 5 years. I now can't stand listening to them as my DT990s sound sooooooooooo much better. I was a bit sad honestly...but happier at the same time

I have a Mini^3 for my DT990s and I like the combo. I've heard a lot of people say Meier amps are perfect for Beyers.

I have the DT770/250's...and like them very much. Just amplifying with OP2227 Cmoy's currently, but have a burning desire for the SOHA!!

Anyone have a bone stock SOHA hooked up to the DT770 / 250's?

I received my DT770/80's yesterday and love them. Playing Uncharted on the PS3 last night was aural bliss.

Anyway, I did not get a storage case to put them in. With kids running through the house, I'd prefer not to get a Headphone Stand. A nice case would be much better.

Anybody have any suggestions (link) where I could buy a case that these cans would fit in nicely?

Thanks!

ive been a beyer adapter since 2006 or so. i was originally an audio technica fan since 2004 or so... my mistake. beyer is wamer, and yet hits detail and accuracy in trance perfectly where the audio techinca at the same price of dt880 falls like a rock in a pond for nice bass and warmish mids

That -could- be, but another $250 is hella steep for smoother treble

Was a damn shame, I liked the 990's otherwise.

I have tried to redeem the DT990 by lowering the high frequencies in many ways. Foobar EQ, cloth infront of the driver for exemple, but every method have had some drawback. The cloth seemed to take away too much air and detail, and the foobar eq does the same aswell.

I have now built a small lowpass filter: HeadWize - Project: An Equalization Circuit for the beyerdynamic DT990 Pro Headphones by LXH2

I have the 32 ohm version of dt990 though and don't know how much this affects the intention of the schematic. I've built "version 1" and "Capt. Z modified LXH2" and the latter seems to be the best for me.

Positive: This filter does indeed reduce the treble, which increases the bass and mids. DT990 now sounds like the bassphone I thought it would be. Really nice to have a basspumping phone without annoying treble.

Negative: I have not listened to it very long, so I can't tell how much detail is lost. Some air is lost, but I'm not sure if it's the reduction of treble which induce this. It also sounds like some detail is lost, but this might also be due to the reduction in treble (maybe there isn't any loss of detail).
On some songs the bass might be loose, but I can't tell yet if this is due to the filter or if the treble used to mask this.

I will listen some more and also break in the filter by pink noise. During the first 40 minutes, break in did indeed happen and was very noticeable, but after that I can't tell. Maybe the capacitor can burn in some more but will just wait and see.

It's a rather cheap and easy filter to make so I recommend everyone who don't like the treble of dt990 to build it.

EDIT: Before this filter, I've never though of the DT990 as a bassy phone, sure more bass than ms2i and dt880 but sennheiser px100 had more punch. With this filter, dt990 has more and better punch than px100.

The 990s need to be paired with the right amp and DAC...it's not as forgiving as other headphones. If you have the correct setup it'ld be hard to beat

Just got a pair of DT880's. This is my first "high-end" (though it's not high end on this forum apparently, compared to some electrostatics) pair, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I'm loving the sound. My only previous pair was a senn HD280, and the tonal balance is much more in check IMO. I'm running them unamped, but love the sound regardless. Funny, because it's from the line-out of a chaintech AV-710, which supposedly needs an amp, though right now it's only in the back of my mind. I think it's due to the relatively high impedance; I listen to my headphones at very low levels (windows has me barely one tick from zero on the volume slider) and the impedance means less current draw, which is what ends up killing it on this specific soundcard. Anyone have any recommendations for an amp that matches well with these phones in the 150 dollar or less range? Doesn't have to be portable, but I probably won't get it till Christmas when I get gift money. But even now, these headphones sound damn good
