Another DeadHead BeyerHead! You're a kindred spirit.

Yep they do need a decent source, that's true. Morph - the 600ohm version is better than 250 IMO. It's the same headphone, but more refined. What that means is any transient brightness or harshness is just gone now. The same, but a bit better. I suppose this could be because I paid more for them, but I'm so familiar with the old 600ohm monsters, that I don't think that's the case. Had I not liked these bad boys I could have just sold them for what I paid.

As it is, for me it comes full circle and this is where I stop. This is the sound I've been looking for. Sure I could improve the source, get baby steps "closer to real" - but I have too many bad recordings of good music for that.

It's all there if you just search. I know I've talked too much about them already myself. I say try the 250ohm first and if this sounds like it could be for you, know that it can be improved a little. If it's completely not for you, then you know to just sell it and move on.

Wow, well I missed that one.. I did a brief search, but never came across the 600 ohm version... oh well, I'll go for it! Sounds like there's a lot to like\love about the 250 ohm version also!

Oh yes indeed, there is much to love with these 990s 250ohm... You know they remind me very much now of my Grados, if only they were to have a respectable soundstage... Yep, very close comparison there !!!

Any competant amp should be able to.

I agree, if a Sony D10 pcdp managed, a decent amp certainly will too. I'm not saying that the old dt990 couldn't have sounded better coming from something better than the D10, obviously it could have. Just as an audio newb at the time, I was in sonic heaven, which says much for just how well they did sound, even underdriven.

How does modern stuff cope with 600ohm? I don't even know, I haven't tried.

An iPod cannot cope at all. But my iMod connected to a Larocco PRII has no problem
