Depends on which model. Air might leak more which can have unexpected effects, distortion (especially in base) might be much worse. It's a hack. Also Chanel balance might not be perfect. You can't know how ATH engineering/intended its entire design.

With EQ'ing out any problems you can end up with good results but it might not be easy / straightforward! :)

any comparisons with R70x ??
My initial a/b is that the ad2ks have more treble and mid energy. R70x more smooth top end, laid back and linear. Vocals more placed back, overall sound is sweeter, less dry than AD2ks. Imaging about the same, soundstage ad2ks slightly better. Very typical ATH house sound being an ATH collector and enthusiast. Pain clamp though, gonna add more padding to reduce that treble too (could be even more forward than the a2000x geez)

Does anyone know if the 2000x is still being produced for the Japanese market only? I know they are discontinued, at least for the North America and Euro markets.....

Anyone have the ad2000x's connected to a balanced amp? If so, what cables/adapter or mods are you running?

Just pulled the trigger on a used ATH-AD2000 for $208 shipped from Japan, which seemed a good deal cheaper than it usually goes for. I'm thinking of adding these to my collection and ditching the K712. I'm a big fan of mid-centric headphones - the K400 is my favorite in my collection right now, but it offers a more distant, spacious and cerebral presentation that's pretty lacking as far as intensity or viscerality goes. I'm hoping these will offer a kind of yin-yang relationship with the K400. I'll update once I get them (hopefully in a couple weeks). The pads on the pair I'm getting are pretty worn, but if I'm enamored I'll just eat the cost for new pads.

Regardless of performance, these seem like the kind of wonderful historical (perhaps even mythical) oddity that makes this hobby so enjoyable. I thought the Sextetts had a really nice, very forward and aggressive presentation, but the grainy treble really blows and I don't really have anything that can adequately drive them, so I'm hoping these are able to capture some of that rawness.

The mids on the Sextetts and AD2000s are similar in their forward presentation. I would say the Sextetts are more musical, while the 2000s are drier sounding.
While the Sextetts are power hungry, the 2000s are amp finicky.

208.00 for a pair is a steal.

I received my pair earlier in the day. I definitely see what people are talking about regarding engagement. Everything is very present and full and the macrodynamics are the best I've heard on a pair of headphones. Unfortunately it looks like I've run into a slight problem, and I'd love some input. After listening to them all day, I can't shake the idea that these sound darker than they should. I know that they have a certain amount of treble roll-off and that the mids are dominating, generally speaking, but the treble seems recessed, which is strange given that many people have called these bright headphones.

I think the culprit is probably the deteriorating pads that it came with (which are really kind of gross - greasy, with the coating on the bottom part sloughing off - but I knew they would be like this). The sound of the headphones right now is very dependent on how they're positioned on my head, and pulling them away from my ear just barely enough to break the seal is enough to make the headphones sound much more open. Does it seem like I'm likely right about the pads, or is a recessed treble something others have noticed with these cans even with pads in good condition? If these replacement pads don't work to open up the sound a tiny bit, I may try to get one that's a bit thicker, just to get a little more air into the sound. And I'm not looking for a drastic change - they just seem a little dark, given what I was expecting. While I do like my bright headphones, I doubt this is just me - even my Sextetts sound brighter than the AD2000s as of right now.

Perceived response shouldn't be so dark, see this example measurement:

Mine sure aren't. Could be the pads though. I don't like stock ad2000 pads since my ears touch the driver. I use ZMF Auteur Suède Perforated pads now. I'm sure some less expensive brainwav XL variant could work too though.

Yes, that's what I thought. Right now, I've bought a third-party velour recreation of the stock pads, which is on its way. Failing that, I guess I'll try something that puts a little more space between my ear and the driver. Tried the pads from my K553, which made them even darker, actually, so I guess solid pleather pads are out.

As for impressions so far, though, none of my headphones have been able to do justice to Cocteau Twins. These definitely can. They're so good for shoegaze. And yeah, they're uncomfortable as hell. This is an exciting purchase! Thanks @Monsterzero for turning me onto these in your Sextett review. They're a great complement to the K400s.
