Audeze LCD-3 Impressions Thread

I've been considering a set of those. Though, TBH, I'd really love a fully-closed portable to compliment so I can listen on my laptop on the couch.

Right now I'm also using Periodic Be which match just goddamn gloriously. Bassier, yes, but they have that full, "loudspeaker" experience that other IEMs lose.

I would give the Meze 99 Classics a try. Quite a lot like the Periodic Be.

For a smoother, warmer, higher-end sound, try the AudioQuest NightOwl. It's on a MASSIVE sale now, since AQ is stopping production of all headphones for the foreseeable future.

I actually heard a set of the Classics. Definitely a good set.

The NIghtOwl is absolutely on my list...

just about to have my pre 2016 fazors replaced after a driver failure.

Reading back 30 pages or so it’s a bit disappointing to learn the 2016 version has a different sound, really loved these things. Hopefully the new version isn’t a letdown.

I just had mine replaced and the sound was nearly identical to the 2014 version IMO.

I feel like Audeze would be really upset to hear this.

Maybe not, it shows that Audeze has succeeded in getting some consistency in its manufacturing.

The biggest change in sound was the adoption of the 110 ohm driver in 2014. There was no confusing it with the previous 50 ohm driver.

But the 2016 version didn't sound much different if at all. That's fine with me.

It's arrived!

08/08/2016 LCD-3 Fazor with Carbon Fiber strap.

Using the same cable I found so splendid for the LCD-2: plusSound X6 T-Metal

The LCD-3 is no bloody joke. It's a serious step up from the LCD-2. It's significantly smoother, more liquid, and refined-sounding. It's resolving at a higher level. The sound is clearer, cleaner, and more holographic. The bass is on a whole other level. I can't quite figure out what it's doing, but I like it! :D

I actually feel these are darker and richer than my 2014 LCD-2.2F. I know that's not how most people describe them, but that's how I'm hearing it. And it's awesome!

Looks like I'll be getting rid of my LCD-2s. :D

Great write-up. Mirrors my impressions of the step up from 2F to 3F almost exactly. Enjoy them!

They are by quite a margin. In my opinion the LCD-2 Fazor 2014 is the worst revision, too bright and disappointing bass extension.
Here’s a comparison between my old LCD-2 Fazor 2014 and my LCD-3 2016:
(Red is LCD-2 and black is LCD-3)

Very interesting indeed. I honestly don’t consider my 2016 LCD-3F dark at all. Perhaps darker than bright cans like the HD800 but I find them just warm of neutral with spectacular bass, beautifully balanced mids and plenty of sparkle up top - actually a lot more sparkle than I imagined they would have, and that’s from my warm of neutral R2R-11.

With a significant dip in the lower treble/presence region, they are absolutely dark. Your graph explains perfectly what I'm hearing. But it's not dark in a bad way. It simply allows for a laidback, exceptionally smooth presentation. Thanks to that upper treble bump and marvelous extension, it retains clarity and resolution.

I love the sound.

Just upgraded from lcd2f to lcd3f. What would you guys recommend on amp/dac for the lcd3f? It doesn't have to be portable but form factor needs to be simple and small as I don't have a lot of desktop space. I have been using chord mojo for my lcd2 and I heard it may not be good enough for the lcd3.

I get great synergy with my LCD-3F (2016) and the Audio-Gd R2R-11. Call it “entry level” if you like but it sounds better and is more powerful than anything I’ve heard under $1000, and certainly far better and more suited to driving the LCD-3 than the Mojo. Of course you can just get a decent amp for it and use the Mojo as a dac. As always, YMMV.
