Amps that can drive the HiFiMan HE-6 planar headphones

I was curious about the X350.5. Spec sheets says it leaves class a at 80 w, much higher than normal for a class ab amp.
40w into 8 ohms is about 13 watts into 50 ohms, so it should be in class a all the time with a he6.
I don't follow your numbers. 40W @ 8 ohms is around 6,4W @ 50 ohms.

I did a quick spreadsheet to calculate, but maybe I screwed up?
Still, 6.4 W into the he6 is plenty.

EDIT: I double checked, and pretty sure its 12.8W at 50 ohms. This is assuming that voltage will drive the wattage at 50 ohms and not current.
80 watts at 8 ohms gave a voltage of 25.3, and p=v2/r

Oh, I said 80 watts into 8 ohms, not sure why you used 40 watts?

I quoted you, you said 40W into 50 ohms. In the sentence before that you talked about 80. So, if you don't know what you mean I sure don't :D

Anyway that works out to 6,4W. I agree it's enough.

50 ohms / 8 ohms = 6,25

1 / 6,25 * 40 = 6,4

My bad then. Its really 80 watts into 8 ohms. Didn't pay enough attention to my previous post.

So it really is 12.8 watts into 50 ohms.

The amp looks like a beast, not your normal class ab amp.

That's a nice amp but there are still dedicated headamps like the Master 9P that I would choose over a speaker amp just to run headphones off.

The Pass X Series are as a group the best fairly high powered amps I've ever heard.

Not the first amp i'd reach for for the HE-6 but they are unlikely to be topped with any frequency.

I am asking because I am using rear ports from TT2 and it sounds very good. Actually, one of the best bass I have ever heard from headphones. Visceral experience with great control and speed across the range. Transients are spectacular. TT2 is really good. But then, I tried also Lyr3 with TT2 as a DAC. It doesn't has that level of control like TT2 rear ports has, but the Lyr3 has a nice tonality with HE6se V2. But the problem is, Lyr3 have some protection circuit which is turning amp off when it is warmed and there is some critical passages in music. It's little annoying. So, before Schiit will announce Mjolnir 3, I am finding something which will be better than TT2 rears as I feel, there is more what these rabbit hole kind of headphones can do. And I simply want to crawl into that hole. Slightly, ehm... And Pro iCAN have tubes. But I am also looking for some Vioelectrics, Bursons, Flux, ...

When I was young, everything was big for me. Even a door handle was difficult to reach. Now it doesn't matter anymore.eee

If only it were smaller.
Audio-gd does power supplies right. If you want that kind of power in something that will run cool enough and not self-destruct, it's going to be large.

I wouldn't recommend Violectric or Burson for the HE-6. I used the Burson CV2 and it wasn't a good match. I currently have the CV3XR and it is incredible with all of my headphones, but don't think it will be a good match with the HE-6. I've also used a Violectric V281 and didn't think it was the best match.

For the HE-6 and tubes, I think the Woo WA5SE is the best match I've found. I loved it when I had the WA5SE. I regret selling it. It was incredible. It's a HUGE two chassis amp though, but well worth the space.

For a small amp that is going to kill it with the HE-6 I think you may like the iFi Diablo. I use it with many hard to drive headphones like the Blackwood and the Modhouse Argon Mk2. It has brought new life to these. I was going to sell both of these headphones but decided not to with the Diablo. It will give you ~3 Watts with the HE-6 @ 12V. Very powerful, dynamic, rocking amp.
