You're getting better and better at that. Beautiful work.

I am still thinking of getting a lathe but I am afraid all the tools etc. would make it damn expensive.

Your suspicion is right, I have spent almost 1K € on lathe, tools, sharpening stuff & accesories meanwhile...

Not a good idea for a student then.

Oh, I am. I have sent e-mails to like 5-6 stores already asking if they have them in stock and are willing to ship internationally.

Nick just left. And I have to say that I LOVE his K701's. At first, they sounded like crap to me, very shrill. With 2kHz and 4kHz EQ'd down a little, they were fantastic! In fact, they reminded me a lot of the MS Ultimate. I want a pair

In fact, Nick, I removed the second layer of t-shirt from the pads, and now the Ultimate sounds even a little more like your K701.

We've examined that topic on many meets with many different probands as well. The K701 and the Ulti indeed can sound very alike in respect of tonality (dependent from quality spreads both models suffer severely from). However, the AKG's s soundscape is smaller, but has more precise placement of instruments. Detailling abilities and blackness are roughly on par. The Alessandros remain still unbeaten in repect of musicality & genre bandwidth.

Just came back. Conclusions:

- The K701 is better than I (we!) thought (just needs some EQ)

- The MS-U is a phenomenal can with great mids and a lot of musicality
- The MS-1000 sounds identical to the MS-U with the latest configuration; just doesn't have the resolution of its 700$ big brother
- The DT880CB woodied is indeed better than the stock CB (and 600OHM Deep Darth Beyer)
- But it remains a Beyer (still polite)
- Who would have known: the K701 pads are angled!

[size=x-small]There's a mod you can do with the K70* which, for me, sorts out their sound nicely - basically cut a ring of that fake chamois stuff, cut a little section out of each one (so there's kind of a keyhole shape rather than a hole) and put them under the rings of foam beneath the pads. Warms up the mids nicely and makes the sound a bit more realistic for me. Bit off topic on this thread but hey, if we're going down that tangent…

Thanks Eddie I will definitely look into that. I believe chamois is the kind of leather you use for polishing, right? Do you cut the keyhole to the same size as the stock foam?

Perhaps we should discuss this over the PM system.

Yep, the K701 and the MS1000 do sound very similar. It's why I sold my MS1000 in the first place - I felt that the K701 did almost everything just a little bit better. There was something a little bit odd about the MS1000's soundstage - like it wasn't quite there, like maybe something was "echoey" or a little bit too distant. the K701, IMO, has just the right presentation. It was also more comfortable and didn't make me look too much like Frankenstein (the deeper cups on the MS1i really make a difference when you add distancers and jumbo pads...)
