    AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

I use these phones with the MAD Ear+ & XP-7. I personally prefer the MAD/K601 combo (bigger soundstage/more open with a touch more bass), although it's probably not really a fair amp comparison. FWIW, the Hornet does a bloody good job with the K601 too.

    Ray Samuels Audio Emmeline XP-7

I have both the XP7 & Hornet. To my ears, with a decent source & phones, the XP7 is in a class above the Hornet. Eats batteries though so I'd invest in 2 sets of high capacity 9V rechargeables. The dedicated PSU looks nice but is pricey. Congratulations on an excellent first amp...

    VAT issues in the UK

I've bought several amps from companies & individuals in the USA & Canada for shipping to the UK. Some of these sellers (e.g. RSA, MAD) have, without being asked, kindly declared the goods as commercial samples/gifts and have vastly under-rated the true cost of the gear. This has kept the VAT...

differences between older MAD ear amps and newer versions

Check out the latest issue (Nov 2007) of Dr P's newsletter available on his website - it provides a very nice overview of the evolution of the MAD headphone amps. I think he describes several minor internal differences (capacitor types?) between the old & current incarnations of the Ear+ HD...

    Anyone Have Ray Samuels XP-7

A compact and solidly built amp with a lovely clean sound. It has a small foot print and sits comfortably on my bedside table with a Sony D33 perched on top. Gets through batteries quickly so I'd advise buying it with the PSU if you plan on listening to it for extended periods. Not really...

Is there any place that I can get decent CD or MD player in Northern America?

I just picked up a very nice MZ-R30 with all the accessories off ebay for $70. It's well built with a dedicated line out which sounds great through my XP-7/AKG601. Here's another one... Sony MZ-R30 Portable Mini Disc Player/Recorder (Bundle) - eBay (item 290196170111 end time Jan-12-08...

    MAD Ear+ Purist HD thread.

...and I am now spending my day off listening to the The Shins and Newton Faulkner, happily immersed in the lovely warm but punchy sound this amp produces. Love the completely retro styling too - the volume knob is just like one on my cooker... BTW, very professional and flawless transaction...

    Losing our dog

I practised as a vet for 10 years and euthanased more pets than I'd care to remember in that time. Whilst it is terribly difficult for an owner to bring the life of a beloved family pet to an end, it is, ultimately, a selfless act motivated by tremendous humanity, love and respect. My best...

XP-7 - what an absolute corker!

Thank you all for the comments on the power supply. Nice as the PSU looks, I think it's going to be rechargables and a stack of new CDs instead. As an aside, I would recommend http://english2american.com for excellent definitions of any english slang words and phases that may crop up in the...

XP-7 - what an absolute corker!

Well, I've just received my XP-7 (fitted with the AD797 op amps) and I have to say, after 72 hours of near constant listening with the AKG 601s, I'm chuffed to bits. I'm listening to Beck's Sea Change (a very popular CD in our household) and picking up previously unheard nuances. This amp is...

What amps match well with the AKG 601?

I've been using this combo for the past 4 months as a home rig and absolutely love it. I listen to lots of electronica, acoustic and classical music using a Musical Fidelity X-Ray CDP hooked up to the Hornet with a £20 QED J2P lead. It's a big, clean, expressive sound (whoa! - beardy...

My New Hornet M and its Journey to the UK

I was also very impressed with Ray's service. He declared the package as a "commercial sample", without me even having to ask, so no VAT or customs charges for me either. It's a fabulous little amp that does its stuff with a wide range of phones and sources. My only regret is that I don't...
