I've never felt my beyers were lacking in the low end. Try a pair of the new edition of dt990's sometime.

If open headphones are an option, I'd recommend trying the 2005 / new version DT990 too. I think the soundstage on them should be a bit wider than the 770's, not to mention crisper highs. The pair well with a Meier Corda Arietta if/when you decide to buy an amp.

I haven't heard many of the top tier headphones, but for me the 2005 edition dt990 and headfive is an amazing combination. I have had it running for over a year and have yet to feel the need to upgrade.

dt990 2005 edition. Huge soundstage with good imaging. a little bass heavy, a little bright. but you may have to pony up for an amp to get the best sound out of them.

2005 dt990's could fit the bill as well. Depending on your tastes in music that is. If you aren't a fan of big bass, the HD595'd work well too.

If you believe in burn-in, it shouldn't be some mystical thing that only happens to higher-end cans. The drivers in cheap phones would need to move around some and settle in too,wouldn't they?

I'm not sure if this translates to the whole EH line or not, but I owned a pair of eH2200's about 5 years ago, and they weren't very good. Of course, I didn't realize how bad they were until I got a pair of HD 595's, but yeah....I wouldn't recommend them.

I bought the dt990's and never looked back. Of course, I also have a paid of Senn HD595's so, if I want to hear something more oriented towards mids, i can slap those on.

If you have a chance, check out the 2005 version of beyerdynamic's dt990. it sounds like exactly what you are looking for.
