Depends on the game. If I really need positional audio(FPS's mainly) I'll use CMSS3D but it definitely hurts sound quality. RTS, RPG, etc I turn it off to get that good quality back. Hell, if the game doesn't use hardware sound I even put it on entertainment mode for that extra "touch" of quality.

Well, the forte definitely passes cmss 3d through spdif. That I know. I'm with you on the cmss distortion thing too, sound quality has always taken a hit for me with it on. On my old extreme music and now my forte. Each card has it's own sound signature but that distortion is exactly the same...

I can clearly tell a difference between recent sound cards I've had, and mp3 players too. My sansa clip sounds much better and cleaner than my cheapo $10 mp3 player from 2 yrs ago.

I don't think the AD700 is warm in the highs at all, maybe in the mids though. Basically I'm trying to tame the brightness in the highs but not the mids or lows. There's got to be a way to achieve this. Although burn-in DID tame the highs with my old extreme music card, I upgraded to the forte...
