Shure SRH-940 vs Beyer DT1350
I'm a big fan of my SRH940. The Shure mid-centric sound signature works well for me. They're comfortable (not super heavy, good headband, comfortable earpads). Isolation seems pretty standard to me for a closed can (no problems except in very loud environments).- Othello3

Best headphones for a College Student
There are a lot of threads on this very topic, and I suspect others will recommend a forum search. As a looong-time student I think I'm in a decent position to provide suggestions but I'm a little confused by your question. Are you wondering whether you need a dac/amp to drive the...- Othello3

Universal fit IEM for jazz– Shure or Aurisonics ASG-1 or Heir 4ai?
Interesting, kyuuketsuki. I am very intrigued by the ASG-1's ability to handle my favorite instruments, but I am concerned that I probably won't be able to demo any of these phones before I buy. I'm just frustrated because frankly I don't love my options and had very high hopes for Heir and...- Othello3

Universal fit IEM for jazz– Shure or Aurisonics ASG-1 or Heir 4ai?
Hi all, I've been looking to replace my Shure 420 iems for a while now, but the situation has become untenable. I love these phones, at least I love them the way that you love your first real high end anythings. I'm a big jazz fan, and I spend most of my listening time with straight-ahead...- Othello3

Shure SE846: A New In-Ear Flagship From Shure. Finally! (Impressions p26-28)
Well, this has devolved into a remarkably stupid thread. Shure is selling a high-end product in a free market economy, if there's no demand for it then they won't sell any, and those of you complaining about the price will probably be thrilled. Or Shure did their due diligence, they'll sell to...- Othello3

Does anyone know if it's at all possible to test the Heir universal models at all? I understand that they are not sold retail but does the company offer test models or a no questions return policy? Thanks- Othello3

Best upgrade from aging Shure 420 for Jazz/Rock
Also, any thoughts on the Heir 3.Ai? I had never heard of the company until recently but they seem to have incredibly reasonably priced universal IEMs given the alleged quality.- Othello3

Best upgrade from aging Shure 420 for Jazz/Rock
I'm looking for some advice regarding an upgrade from an aging pair of Shure SE420. Unfortunately, the Shures still sound pretty good, but the rubber housing is shredded, the cable terminations are deterioriating, etc. Its like snapping the button off a pretty good pair of jeans - yes, I could...- Othello3

Defining a new "upper-mid-level" in IEMs
A few years ago I made my first real step into the head-fi world, picking up a pair of Shure 420's for use on the road and in loud places. While I've always been a big room speaker kind of guy, I loved the sense of intimacy and the clarity offered by a good set of IEM's, and while my Shures are...- Othello3

Closed Headphones: Battle Royale
I've read up on the ATH-M50 and specifically didn't include it because I didn't think the sound profile would work for me. Maybe I was wrong. Any more thoughts on the Denons? They seem to have slipped through the cracks. I'll be honest, I'm really liking the Shure SRH-840. Any reasons why...- Othello3

Closed Headphones: Battle Royale
I am looking for phones that I can use for studying in a relatively quiet library. Thus, isolation is not an issue but leakage is an issue. The next most important criterion is comfort as I have every intention of listening to these cans for hours on end. My price range is around $100 The...- Othello3

Just bought Shure SRH440 - disappointed at isolation
My IEMs can block out the noise of a train or subway so long as I insert them properly. Could the OP comment on the sound quality and comfort of the SRH440? Are they even remotely as good as their big brother the SRH840?- Othello3

Best DIY Amp <$200 for moderately skilled
I've been looking into a commercial headamp for around $300 but it seems that the general consensus is that a considerably cheaper DIY amp will provide a better sound. I am not terribly experienced in audio DIY but I am an engineering student so I A) like to put stuff together and B) have lots...- Othello3

Discount Audio Stores in NYC
I have some older components to upgrade and I would like to buy a decent headphone amp but I lack money. I have no problem buying used or slightly older equipment so I think a discount store or audio-specific flea market (or anything of that ilk) would be a good place to start. Does anyone know...- Othello3

Cheap fullsize amps vs. quality portables
I appreciate the reply but that really is not the point of this thread. The fact is that a number of cheaply made amps are poorly made, the same goes for just about anything these days. So my intent was not to sound "elitist" but to avoid buying an amp that won't last. Unfortunately I have...- Othello3

Cheap fullsize amps vs. quality portables
It seems that there is a strong sentiment against portable amps in general and it doesn't take much to figure out why but I have a more specific question regarding the relatively inexpensive amp market. I am new to Head-Fi but I intend to expand my horizons as I will likely be living without a...- Othello3
