320kbps VBR vs 320kbps CBR MP3's?
Do not transcode a 320kbps CBR file into a VBR file. Though it is indeed possible, transcoding from one lossy format to another leads to a degradation of audio quality and the possibility of artifacts appearing in the audio. If you want to use VBR instead of CBR, go ahead and re-rip the audio...- jewman

First Headphones for Casual Student
I hope you like them as well! I tested them out a few months ago, and they really impressed me. The isolation was great, especially with music playing. I tested the bass out with "Boys In Da Hood" and it was very tight. However, the bass was not overpowering. I also enjoyed the percussion as...- jewman

Headphone recommendations on Head-Fi - a suggestion ..
I think this is a good idea. It would be a good way to consolidate headphone reviews and facilitate searches for headphones. I found this review plugin and thought it might be a good start.- jewman

iRiver H120 sd expension mod
This is very interesting. Does this mean that if you flash Rockbox into the ROM, that you can use any SD card, without needing to ensure that the Rockbox folder exists on every card? Great mod btw!- jewman

Has anyone tried the srh240? I'm thinking of getting them if they are similar in signature to the ATH-m50.- jewman

Wet Shaving
When I started shaving a year ago, I decided to start of DE, because I'm a sucker for tradition . I use the Merkur Futur with Burt's Bees shaving cream and aftershave. I notice that some people mention using moisturizers after they shave. Do they make moisturizer/aftershave combos? Or should I...- jewman

How much more can the economy take?
I know you said no politics, so I will do my best, because from my point of view, it's very hard to disconnect them, as they indeed affect one another. I see this is a cooling down period for the economy, and it's only natural. There are several factors that led to this, all of which are...- jewman

iHP120 and rockbox
Have fun with Rockbox! Check out the online manual, Rockbox has some very powerful features, from crossfeed, to a precision equalizer, to tetris. Basically, with Rockbox you can control very minute details of your music, and don't get me started on the themes!- jewman

Female-fronted goth bands - suggestions?
I recently got into female-fronted metal myself. Check out Lacuna Coil, Epica, Nightwish, and Birthday Massacre. You might also like Visions of Atlantis. And for the record, these might not be considered "goth" but they're just my recommendations. I'm not good at discerning between different... -

Difference between MP3 and FLAC?
I have never really attempted any sort of scientific A-B comparison myself. However, I feel that, if I only have a check a box on my encoder to rip into FLAC, and the hard drive is large enough to hold the songs, I figure, why not? Not to mention, if you need to, you can transcode it into...- jewman

Why does Punk Rock get praised by critics while Metal gets bashed?
Honestly, I couldn't care less which critics like and dislike which genres. And regarding this notion of metal being "falsely arty," how is that even possible? There is no "right" or "wrong" in art, it's all subjective, just like Bose headphones I guess. -
Audio Technica ATH M50
I only have a few rap songs in my collection, one of my favorites being Boyz in Da Hood by Easy-E, and the bass is very good. It's not overpowering, but rather presented as the producers wanted it to be, that is to say, prominent The bass is also accurate. The vocals are clear, and the...- jewman

D1001 Vs. ES7 Vs. M50
You can get the m50s in a straight-cabled version, called the "m50s" Guitar Center sells the straight-cabled version, and you can find it on ebay as well. As for the m50's sound, I've found it to be a good all-around performer. I've found it more than acceptable for metal (Nightwish) and...- jewman
