I use the A816 with Linux. Just mount it and transfer files like a usb flash drive.

Personally I find lp2 better than hi-lp. For portable use, I encode the music at Hi-SP. Although I much prefer the original SP via opitcal recording, it is too time consuming to encode my CDs.

The current modern king of PCDP isn't saying much about the market, but it would probably be the Sony D-NE20.
