I use Hi-LP (Atrac3+ 64 Kbps) in my discman and in my Minidisc. I found this sound very similar to the MP3 128 Kbps, with half space. Very decent sound for portable use.

The atrac3 called LP2 (132 Kbps) isn't much better, with double space.

With HI-MD I can put 35-40 CDs in a single HI-MD disk 1 GB in HI-LP (64 Kbps). In a normal MD 80 minutes I can put 12 CDs. Very good storage and I has removible capatity.

I think MP3 it's good at 192 Kbps CBR, or using VBR (alt preset standard) in Lame encoder. The size of this files it's noticiable bigger than the Atrac3+ HI-LP file.

At low bitrates, Atrac3+ has is noticiable better work.

What are your experiences?

For my stuff:

1) For portable use: Atrac3+ Hi-LP (64) or MP3 VBR Lame APS (min: 128, max: 256). Headphones Senn MX500 or Senn PX200 for some isolation.

2) For High quality sound: Atrac3+ Hi-SP (256). Headphones PX100/PX200 or HD497.

Personally I find lp2 better than hi-lp. For portable use, I encode the music at Hi-SP. Although I much prefer the original SP via opitcal recording, it is too time consuming to encode my CDs.

HI-SP is the best for SQ, but in a HI-MD disk 1 GB only I can put 9 CDs.
If I use a standard MD 80 minutes only 2 CDs (in HI-MD mode).

LP2 seems best comprimise in SQ and size. But I feel LP2 very similar too HI-LP and it has double size.

And another question, I can't put native MP3 files. SonicStage allways converts it to Atrac3plus. It's correct?

Thanx

It depends. Second generation Hi-MD players/recorders natively support mp3 playback so SonicStage would not convert them to atrac3plus but place a DRM wrapper around the mp3 file.

Finally I not found the Atrac3 LP2 (132) much better than Atrac3+ HI-LP (64).

The very best it's HI-SP (256). I wondered if I put 3 CDs in a HI-MD disc.

In HI-SP I put 2,5 CDs (sometimes 3 CD) in a MD-80 disc in HI-MD mode.

Actually, the very best is old-fashioned SP recorded on a deck, not a portable, IMHO. Takes up a lot of space, though.
