I use Hi-LP (Atrac3+ 64 Kbps) in my discman and in my Minidisc. I found this sound very similar to the MP3 128 Kbps, with half space. Very decent sound for portable use.
The atrac3 called LP2 (132 Kbps) isn't much better, with double space.
With HI-MD I can put 35-40 CDs in a single HI-MD disk 1 GB in HI-LP (64 Kbps). In a normal MD 80 minutes I can put 12 CDs. Very good storage and I has removible capatity.
I think MP3 it's good at 192 Kbps CBR, or using VBR (alt preset standard) in Lame encoder. The size of this files it's noticiable bigger than the Atrac3+ HI-LP file.
At low bitrates, Atrac3+ has is noticiable better work.
