Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I hear you. I probably didn't express what I was trying to say as clearly as I could have. What I'm getting at is that the Apple TV is a junk device from the standpoint of optimally listening to digital audio. I'm not so much trying to defend the removal as point out that anybody that's...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Meh. The Apple TV converts your material to 48kHz, even if it's 44.1kHz. Because reasons. Why are we getting hung up on whether or not there's an optical digital port?   In any event, they provide digital audio on the HDMI port like everybody else. It's where the industry is going, along...

    Audeze LCD-4

After a while with my LCD-3s, the wood on one of the cups cracked. Audeze repaired it without question. I have no doubt that if somehow the headband had any sort of mechanical degradation that Audeze would fix it.

    Inspire IHA-1 tube headphone amp

I'm totally sold on the theory that adding resistor dividers to clear out noise is a hack in this regard. I think that's bait and switch from Mr. Had, however. I disagree strongly that there is no design flaw.   The signal to noise issue is orthogonal to the fact that the close proximity of...

    Audeze LCD-4

I guess I'm the odd one out...   Let's see, the case: The hard case is upgraded from the LCD-2/3/X/XC and has better inserts (there's a second shelf with cables beneath the shelf for the cans. I'm glad it didn't come in a fancy lacquered cherry presentation box. You know what I do with...

    Audeze LCD-4

Seconded. When I first saw it in person I thought "well, this sure isn't going to be an improvement." But it is. The leather band is much thinner and more pliant than the old band (not immediately obvious from the photos) and the carbon fiber is flexible and doesn't seem to directly contact...

    New Schiit! Ragnarok and Yggdrasil

I'll go with the simpler approach, though I believe I'm mostly just paraphrasing myself at this stage.   I got a Yggdrasil. I've been selling the rest of my DAC inventory and ordered another Yggdrasil. It's that good. Maybe there are 5-figure DACs out there that are better, but it gets tedious...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Alright, I think I've got this. One of the new products will be ... a device that combines two digital signals into one.

    New Schiit! Ragnarok and Yggdrasil

In my experience, the PayPal authorizations last about a month. I used this for one of the kilobuck Schiit products (forget if it was Ragnarok or Yggdrasil) that expired; Schiit reached out and asked for updated payment information and everything worked out.

    Inspire IHA-1 tube headphone amp

I don't have the LCD-2, but I'm able to drive the LCD-3 and HD800 to pleasantly loud levels with still about half the volume dial remaining. With 6BX7GTB. That's with a Yggy but I had the same experience with the NAD M51. It did not have enough power to drive the HE-6. Seems a little suspect...

    The Astell & Kern AK240

I'm not trying to pick a fight or be obstreperous, but I do think it is absurd that so many are okay rationalizing material flaws in a $2500-3000 iPod. It's one thing to celebrate what the player is good at, but I think we're doing ourselves a disservice if we're couching these things with...

    The Astell & Kern AK240

Other than my $2500 DAP being completely flawed it's great. How could you possibly complain? ...really? How are people okay with anything less than perfection at the price point? A&K product quality is horrid. For the money it's embarrassing. Makes the Sony zx2 look like a bargain because it...

    Schiit Ragnarok Amplifier

I have not side-by-sided these two amplifiers, but in general I've found the Ragnarok to be incredibly clean and neutral and capable with the HE-6. I haven't played with exotic class-A power  amplifiers, but I briefly flirted with a Creek and Bryston power amp powering them and didn't really...

    Schiit Ragnarok Amplifier

Obviously YMMV and this is not a warranty, but generally speaking you are more likely to destroy your headphones on a lower-powered amplifier than a higher-powered amplifier. The HD800/DT990 can be taken quite loud by a capable amplifier (such as the Ragnarok) without any risk of "over...

    New Schiit! Ragnarok and Yggdrasil

If it helps, Plitron/Torus Power produces Bryston's BIT items; the only real difference is the chassis.

    The Astell & Kern AK240

I've experienced this. Not consistently can't feliably reproduce it. All ALAC files.

    The Astell & Kern AK240

Yes. The design is bad. There are a few anecdotal reports from people that have not had the problem with eidolic connectors but the jack choice (What, 4-pin 2.5mm) and design is just plain bad engineering.

    New Schiit! Ragnarok and Yggdrasil

It's cute to make stuff up, but it would be better if you didn't. The public explanation thus far indicates it's for EMI reasons, not thermal considerations.

    New Schiit! Ragnarok and Yggdrasil

My Yggdrasil has arrived and joined its friends. I had no patience and of course listened to it after just a few minutes of warmup. It sounded pretty good! I'm prone to confirmation bias on this, but one of the things I'd been curious about for a while was based on a comment several misogynistic...

    Schiit Ragnarok Amplifier

Not trying to reignite the heat debate, but what's the issue with it running hot, again? Pretty sure the tubes on the WA5 also throw off a lot of heat... The manual says the yggy is going to run hot too, so I'm anxiously awaiting another round of "the big box of schiit is hot"...

    New Schiit! Ragnarok and Yggdrasil

It seems like folks concerned about whether to use RCA or BNC would be concerned about using an RCA connection to a box that converts medium to optical. But that's just me thinking out loud.

    The Astell & Kern AK240

Doubt it. It's just an inconsistent product with crappy QA, lousy manufacturer support, and poor industrial design. The lucky folks that get a "good copy" are, well, lucky. A flimsy 2.5mm trrs jack was never a good idea, even if it does occasionally work well for some folks.

    The Astell & Kern AK240

I've definitely got the 2.5mm problem. I'm going back to 3.5mm and giving it a spin, but I would be willing at this stage to say "do not buy this player if you intend to use the 2.5mm jack." I have been exceptionally careful with two examples and tried numerous 2.5mm connectors and the...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Not to be pedantic, but I have a hard time assigning Schiit the blame in this case. I think the case here is more "welcome to the audio gear/upgrade-itis/dragon chasing bug." That Schiit has well-defined price tranches makes it easy to climb within their ladder entirely, but this is the...
