Creative Zen and podcasts - gift questions
Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, I couldn't find it. I'd like to get some kind of iPod-y thing for my mom for Christmas, I think she'd love podcasts. I saw some Zen 4gigs on sale at Goodwill with damaged packaging. Being cheap, of course I'm tempted by that. Would a Zen allow me to...- Vicious Tyrant

Furtwangler's La Scala Ring Cycle
OK, so I've heard so much about how great this 1950 (?) recording is even though the sound is bad. So I went ahead and bought a set off eBay recently. Ouch! The sound is way worse than I expected. I enjoy old historical recordings, but this is beyond the pale. I find it unlistenable. The...- Vicious Tyrant

Burn-in and source question (PX-100s)
I got some PX100s lately and I don't like them so much. Their sound just leaves me kind of blah. I do like the handy fold-up feature, and I like the idea of something nice and portable for my iPod. So I was thinking about doing a burn-in, which I've never done before. First, has anyone out...- Vicious Tyrant

I just introduced someone to head-fi
I'm sitting her using the computer and I see a guy walk by with Senn PX-100s. Now, that's not the rarest sight, but it's pretty uncommon. So I have to do some quick calculating: is it worth disturbing his listening to ask about his headphones? So I go ahead and catch his eye and ask if...- Vicious Tyrant

How much do cheaper headphones tell you...
about the same company's more expensive models? For example, if I bought Grado SR-60s, Senn PX100's, and Ety er6's, would that give me a good sense of what brand I should steer towards if (when) I wanted to upgrade? Or are each model within a brand so different that it would not work that...- Vicious Tyrant

Senn 201 seal quality
I just saw the deal on Senn 201 and I thought they might be a fun toy to pick up. My question is this: I like to bring my iPod to bed with me and listen to my Ety 6i's at night. I don't want sound to leak out, so as to not wake up anyone else in bed. However, the Etys are almost too sealed...- Vicious Tyrant

John Wesley Harding (the singer) help
On Adam's Apple, there's a song called the MONKEY AND HIS CAT. I read somewhere this is about some kind of asian legend or some such. I can't find anything online explaining what this song is about - can anyone enlighten me? It's so darn catchy, I'd love to know what he's talking about...- Vicious Tyrant

Great moments in consumer products
I went to the bathroom at Yogi's down here in Btown and the bathroom had the ALL TIME GREATEST AIR HAND DRYER I have ever seen! No exaggeration, this thing (Made by Xleration) was blowing the skin on my hands so hard it looked like Rocky Balboa's face being done over by Clubber Lang in...- Vicious Tyrant

I'm paralyzed
After a couple years of thinking about what to buy, I'm just paralyzed. I've saved up about $1000 to spend on audio. There are so many options and so many opinions, I just can't decide. How about this for a starting point... If you had $1000, how would you divide the money between...- Vicious Tyrant

Question about Wagner's Ring
OK, this might be stupid, but.... What was so powerful about the Ring? What power did it give? Alberich gets caught by Loge while he's wearing it. Fafner's power seems as much about the Tarnhelm making him into a dragon as anything else, he gets killed by Siegfried anyway. Brunnhilde...- Vicious Tyrant

top end headphones for an iPod
I've been kicking around the idea of getting an ipod. I'm a little confused by all the talk of compressed files and FLAC and whatnot. I currently listen to a portable CD player and some old Grado SR-60s. I was thinking I'd get an ipod, add an amp (Headroom microstack, maybe?), then add some...- Vicious Tyrant

Portable CD player - connection to amp question
Gosh, I hope this isn't a really stupid question, but.... I've been looking for a portable CD player to take around with me for going to the library or bedside listening, things like that. I was considering some different amp options - Microstack, PAV2, maybe no amp at all. I was looking...- Vicious Tyrant

Equadorian flute music recommendations
Recently I heard the most lovely, enchanting music - folk music from Ecuador. What I heard absolutely was absolutely heart-breaking. I just have a little cheesy CD of samples and I figured it was just an unknown music form - then I figured "Wait a minute, why not post this on Head-Fi. Surely...- Vicious Tyrant

Pogues: Young Ned of the Hills
Man...... Tonight, I re-found this old tune which I hadn't heard for years. Those guys, for all their drunkeness and problems they REALLY knew how to lay it down. I see the Pogues mentioned here and there on the boards, what a drag they fell apart.- Vicious Tyrant

SR-60s amplified
I've been kicking around the idea of getting nicer equipment for a while now, but other things keep appearing! I'd like to pick up the Microstack, but I need to upgrade my portable source first. My question is: I bought the SR-60s b/c I understood them to sound good without amplification...- Vicious Tyrant

help with Verdi's Otello
Hey operaphiles, I just got two copies of Otello (Toscanini and Serafin - both of which I read are excellent) b/c I had heard it referred to as his masterpiece so often. I'm not feeling this one...I think that opening trumpet thing kind of turned me off. It's pretty intense, maybe a little...- Vicious Tyrant

cheap laptop recommendations
I know these threads pop up now and then - I searched and couldn't find quite what I was looking for, so here's another "please help" thread: My wife wants a cheap-as-possible laptop that really only needs to do two things: Word processing and email/internet stuff. She hopes to be able to go...- Vicious Tyrant

Popera
True Confessions: I listened to Sarah Brightman and Jose Cura (a true opera singer, IMO) sing "Just show me how to love you" last night a full volume and had a true eargasm. Tearing up and everything! Does that make me a bad person?- Vicious Tyrant

Greatest Wotan
Since a new thread seems to pop up every couple months about which Ring Cycle is the best, I thought it might be interesting to approach the Ring from a different angle. Who is your favorite Wotan? I enjoyed Theo Adams (?) on the Bohm recording b/c he sounds so grief-stricken and solemn...- Vicious Tyrant

Gravity
Does anyone out there understand science enough to explain to me in simple terms how gravity works? How do objects attract each other? Is it some kind of wave or force field? Is there a way to measure how objects pull on each other? How would an instrument like that work? Can you somehow...- Vicious Tyrant

Free cellphone scam???

"Rollin' the windows down" tunes
Today was a really pretty sunny day (after a cloudy, wet spring). I was driving around town running errands and put in Johnny Cash's WANTED MAN. When I got to the title song, I had an overwhelming urge to turn up the volume and roll my windows down. I did it and it felt great! What are some...- Vicious Tyrant

Would you have asked?
I was at the coffeeshop with my fam the other day and I saw someone listening to their Bose QC2s on their laptop. cheapest pcdp with optical out
I did a quick search and couldn't find what I was looking for, sorry if this is a repeat. I'm interested in Headroom's MicroStack (DAC and amp), so I'd like to get a PCDP with an optical line out. Any suggestions as to the cheapest way I can go? My understanding is that the DAC actually...- Vicious Tyrant

A complaint about Girl Scout cookies
You know what I don't like about Girl Scout cookies? I don't like parents bringing the order form to the work place and having me sign up. Isn't the point to teach the girls about assertiveness and business and what not? Anyway, I like to have the kids come to work now and then and show...- Vicious Tyrant
