OK, so I've heard so much about how great this 1950 (?) recording is even though the sound is bad. So I went ahead and bought a set off eBay recently.

Ouch! The sound is way worse than I expected. I enjoy old historical recordings, but this is beyond the pale. I find it unlistenable.

The set I bought is the Opera D'Oro set. So my question is are there other editions with improved sound? I don't understand this business about remastering, but could I find a set that has better sound, or is this as good as it gets?

Try the Gebhardt version of the RAI Furtwangler Ring. It's the best of that particular recording I've ever heard. Haven't found a good sounding La Scala yet. I don't think it exists in any better sound.

See ya
Steve
