Yeah, they have different tuning purposes for sure. Mentor works much better for my library and overall tastes than Mason which is why I feel so enthusiastic towards it. But I understand that those who love Mason REALLY love
what do you think are the gross differences between Mentor and Traillii?

Any update impression for SP3000? Thanks in advance.

Hi Alex. A question. Why do you do the graphs at 100db ( going by the 20 hz number for simplicity )? This still makes the mids in the 90’s and then up to 100 again in the treble. No one should be listening at these levels. Can they be done in the 70’s? Or is there a technical reason? Tks.
If I may answer, it's not about listening levels but about getting a consistent level in REW (measurement software) that allows the whole FR range to graph properly without clipping. Too low and the bass won't graph properly or you'll see ripples in the bass FR. Too high and the sound will clip. I like to keep my levels averaging around -18dBFS to -12dBFS for measurement. REW advises similarly. Once the FR graph is measured, you can then adjust the graph's level and align the SPL to whatever you want manually. I align mine to 1kHz at 60Hz (just because I like it there) but you don't really need to. Alex doesn't. Technically, if you're getting good levels as per the software with decent headroom and no clipping, it doesn't matter what SPL you graph at, the FR will be the same.

See the graph below. I adjusted the FR to match 1kHz at 60dB. Originally it was around 1kHz @ 95dB.

Hope I've explained it decently enough. :D

The calibration of IEC-60318-4 ISO requires calibration with a signal at 94dB, thus makes sense to use this range as a reference level.
Remember that this is also non-A-weighted (dbA) measurement. According to OSHA 4h exposure to 95dB is still safe. I think for consumers in EU (non-pro marekt) equipment has to be also rated at max 95dB SPL which points to the fact that this is relatively safe level.

Good morning everyone.
Yesterday my Wife and I took a trip to Utica to visit my son. We took a quick walk at dusk.

I think we need a UM tour kit. What do you say @UniqueMelody ?
Let's finish the pre-orders first, then we may have a tour. Currently, you can contact Andrew to schedule a private audition, he has a demo.

Unique Melody Feel free to reach out to us at any time! To reach me personally, leave me a PM or email me at umwang@uniquemelody.org and I'll get back to you as soon as I can! Stay updated on Unique Melody at their sponsor profile on Head-Fi.

Andrew doesn't send demos to Canada as far as I know. I run a pretty robust tour circuit here in Canada (have done tours with VE, Fir and Lime Ears flagships)-- I'm sure our group would love to hear some UM IEMs and if there's anything I can do to make this happen let me know. Cheers.

Edit: Here is our tour thread if you want to see the process.

I disagree with OSHA on these times. Simply doing a few google searches will show you many charts and studies stating that hearing damage will occur at the 90 db level after 2 hours and greatly lower after that as below:
91db: 2 hours
94db: 1 hour
100db: 15 minutes
110db: 1 minute.

Not sure if these are A-weighted or not. In any event, at 95db you have on average, less than 1 hour, not 4 hours, before hearing damage will occur.

I’d be going off of memory here, but Mentor is a warmer and denser sound overall but mainly in the lows and mids. Upper treble seems to be more present too giving it an airer top end.
Mentor is warmer and more harmonious than Traillii. By heart UM he sounds a bit nasal as if he had a veil in front of him. Traillii on the other hand is very clear and vivid in sound. Is this the same as Mentor?

Your wording is confusing me here. Mentor does have great clarity, detail, and resolution. It is just slightly warmer in overall tone relative to Traillii. Again I’m going from memory though. I’m sure there are people who can answer this better than have spent time with both, it’s been a year since I had the Traillii.
