I'd like to get an opinion from you guys if I could. I have the DX50 and listen to FLAC files almost exclusively; maybe 5% of my files are 320k mp3. Music I listen to is ..... let's say eclectic ; anything from Sarah McLachlan to The Misfits and everything in between. Most of my listening is through TF10s with a Null Audio - Brevity cable ; with this setup I want for nothing soundwise. I'm looking to get , actually I've ordered, the V Moda m80. Was looking for an over ear with a similar sound but not quite as much isolation. Figured for the $79 they are going for on Amazon it was hard to go wrong ; or did I?

I've had some small experience with the m80 back when I was starting out, the build is truly salivatingly superb, feels incredibly tough. Comfort is pretty good too, I didn't get the melon juicing feeling with it on (although my head isnt the broad sort). Sound wise it was very lush but after revisiting it recently, i felt that the bass was abit much for me. Disclaimer: My preferences have migrated to more warm-neutral/ natural sound.

ooo! the massdrop K553? Thoughts on them?

Yup, got em on MassDrop awhile back. They're my first AKG headphones, and I'm enjoying them so far. They've got more bass than I expected, which was a good thing after getting the preconception that AKG HP were bass shy.

Three wishes for K553...
1. Deeper earcups
2. Shorter / detachable cable
3. More memory foam in the headband

Bonus 4th wish - A wee bit more sub-bass

Have you checked out the cable braiding method used for the AKG K550?

I did see the cable braid but haven't tried it yet. If I decide these are long-term HP, I might just look into having the cable terminated at a more reasonable length.

If you do go long term with them I've been in contact with a guy that does re-cables on headphones in the US. He can do a double termination if you like and with whatever cable and length you desire. Just let me know and I can hook you up. Prices seem fairly reasonable.

So Labsters, I've been going through my Notes app and found a quote I saved because it describes very well what music means to me.

Here's the quote:

"Music

"To me, music is...in short...what feelings sound like. Actually...scratch that. It's so much more. It's like an ecstasy for your feelings, an opportunity for them to explore new places, to soar to new heights.

It's a moment in time set aside to gain a better understanding of yourself. And their are certain moments in songs that artists achieve, though maybe not realizing it, that can have a rather drastic effect on people. It's different for everyone, every song means something totally unique to an individual person.

And when an artist gets something right for a certain person, truly right, it's effect can be life changing for that person. Make them see things in a whole new light. Music can move mountains. The question is...how far?"

-Bailey Blum"

My question to Labsters is........ What does music mean to you and why are we so obsessed with it?

And with that, goodnight.

It's simple! Music is life; music is love; music is everything.

I think this has to be one of the best quotes regarding music .....

“Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but nevertheless dazzling, passionate, and eternal form .”

It's often attributed to Plato, but doesn't appear in any of his writings.  So - author unknown, but beautiful none the less.

Or maybe this gem from Aldous Huxley

After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music

I thought the answer was.........

Just kidding. Great replies so far! :)

The thing that really gets me is the way we keep coming back to it. Most things we get tired of after sampling it over a period of time (maybe not sex), but with music it just keeps giving. It speaks to our soul, and our soul loves to listen. As a matter of fact my daughter once said to me 'we are not a body with a soul, we are a soul with a body'. Maybe that's where the magic lies.

Apologies for getting all zen but it's been on my mind lately.

Wow your daughter put that really beautifully. I also share that belief. :D
