I'm a bit surprised that the once much sought after HE-5 is not mentioned here at all. I haven't heard these cans yet, so I'm in no position to give my reco on them (I never give comments on gears which I haven't personally listened to). But after reading the hundreds upon hundreds of pages on the other HE-5 Musings thread, it makes me wonder if indeed they're merely another FOTM I should stay away from.

Yep, to a certain degree, I do agree with you here.

YH100, although I'm betting that a well-amped Stax O2 would walk all over it.

Tamahome77, I enjoyed the W11JPN, but thought that with the Gilmore Lite it was a little thin.
I did think it had serious potential, though my choice wouldn't be Beta22...
With a really nice tube amp or hybrid I think it would be stunning, though not a SOHA II

, Stacker or EHHA...
to each their own though...

It really depends on the tonality one seeks. Theres the neutral-like, flat and clear kind and there's the euphonic, lush and forward kind. I defenitley prefer the latter and so i'd go with W5000, which IMO actually has a stunning balance between a clear and warm/lush character, With the Sexsttets close behind.

I want to say........HD800 is the currently the in-production headphone with the best midrange, but I have not heard the T1. What I have heard from several users however is that the T1's response has a stronger bass impact, but the HD800 has a ever so slightly more foreward (pleasing to most) midrange.

I have not heard the K1000s but I know that they are midrange-king worth based on popular opinion.

The R10s however, both the bass heavy and bass light are probably still midrange king, as far as what I've heard. The bass-light R10s (which was not my prefered headphone of the two variations) had the greatest midrange of any headphone I have ever heard. It was absolutely the most transparent midrange representation I have ever heard and had it had just a bit more bass impact it would have outshone the bass heavy R10s which I think have a fuller presentation. At times I Wish the bass would tone itself down on the bass heavy R10s, which is why I sometimes (often) prefer the HD800 which is not quite as luscious sounding. The bass heavy R10s also has a bit more treble extension over the bass light R10, but the bass light R10s IS mid range king from all the headphones I've heard....there's probably nothing except for the Orpheus (which I have yet to hear) which can truly match it which is why the Orpheus and R10 are the two most sought after headphones on head-fi.

Note, I have not heard ANY Stax models yet, so if I am selling them short, please know that it is not intentional

Mid Range King from my experience:

1a. Bass Light R10
1b. Bass Heavy R10
2. HD800
3. HD600

:-) and I think if you want to have a beautiful midrange without too much treble exposure, the HD600 could be the best in production headphone for you, even more than the HD800 if you do not like revealing (sometimes bright) reproduction of sound

I agree that Yamaha orthos can deliver goreous midranges. Of the headphones I currently have, my Quart Phone 85 (with the right amp) delivers the best mids - a delicious midrange, and with that fabulous float earspeaker soundstage.

I still can't believe I sold my HP-1s a couple of years ago, without being able to have first fully appreciated them. They went for silly cheap too (£25/$40 ish).

I came to the conclusion that I need only one pair of cans as I have only one pair of ears. What silliness!
